Ghosts have always been with us. The oldest recorded evidence of this is contained in a series of clay tablets recovered from excavations into the temple of the God-King of Ancient Mesopotamia, Ashurbanipal, describing inter alia, how a female necromancer, the muselitum , would literally raise a ghost ‘…through a hole in the ground like the wind’ in order to converse with it.
