How about a brand new ipad with 256 GB at £459 ?
    https://www.apple.com/uk/shop/buy-ipad/ipad-10-2

It's even better than the Air 3. It has headphone jack.

Cheers for the link. That does look really good.
I got a bit lost since there seems to be so many variants now but the comparison chart makes it clear for current models at least.

Space grey or Silver. Both appear to have black surrounds.

  • Iv got air 3 and ipad 9. Both have headphone jack. Ipad 9 I thought were about 7 percent better dsp in aum ( before aum dsp specific update ) but sometimes its seems about 20 percent peak better. Ipad air 3 have screen issues. I bought and apple replaced. Both that and replqcement, sometimes the screen stops. Its like buying a car and you should be greatful you were given a replacement but with then same problem. Its not that bad though. It kind of does make me not want to make music. Id maybe buy another ipad 9. Air 5 or just use until when I need to buy an ipad whatever in future. With ipad 9 a sound source. If people say screen is not as good for art as its not laminate. It kind of seems nicer for drums being a bouncy screen but just as responsive with apps like mononoke or mpe, sliders, parameters.

  • Just buy ipad 9. 256gb. I just sold a mint ipad mini 5. Person got a good deal.

  • Thanks for your input.
Seems like a choice between an iPad 9 256GB or an iPad Air 5 64GB.
The latest Air does have the m1 chipset but does cost a fair amount more than I wanted to spend, even with the smaller storage.

  • It’s got to be the iPad 9 given those options. Is there anything that the 9 can’t do that you would want it to? 🤔 I wouldn’t let the laminated screen bother you (if that’s still a difference) - You won’t even notice it normal use.

  • I will be blunt. If you're not using an Apple device to make art, get the iPad 9 256gb. If you do make art, save up to get the iPad Air 5 with 256gb space and the compatible Apple Pencil. No matter which way you slice the beat, 64gb is not enough space for music production and will be eaten up really, really fast! Matter of fact, my new 12.9" iPad Pro already has over 64gb used up on it.

And the reason I factor making art into the decision making is, the iPad 9 does NOT have a laminated screen, and so there's a gap between the glass and the display. The iPad Air 5 DOES have a laminated screen, and so where you touch the Pencil to the screen is where you make the mark. ;)

  • Thanks for the opinions.

    https://www.dimprice.co.uk/apple-ipad-air-5th-generation-2022-m1-256gb-blue

Another option assuming this is a trustworthy retailer.
    (iPad Air 5 for ~£600.)

Getting a bit close for comfort with an iPad Pro but I’m trying to ignore that particular rabbit hole...

I have used laminated and non laminated for art and find very little practical difference between the two.

The non laminated is basically like a Cintiq, which is what most commercial digital art has been done on for years. The laminated screen seems to rank somewhere between novelty and luxury for most artists I know.

Of course, of course, only reason I pressed the point a little is that your original "blunt" comment made it sound more like a rule as opposed to personal preference, like someone saying 'if you are making music you need a built in headphone jack'.

Ah, lol. Now I see what you're getting at. :) Nah, it's my blunt opinion and suggestion, not a hard and fast rule. For me, I don't need a headphone jack since my Bluetooth headphones don't have too much latency, and I'm not live performing anything rapid or fast when I live produce Ambient. Of course a headphone jack is important to others. :)

Beats Solo3. Loooong battery life per charge (like 35-40 hours!) Perfect for performing Ambient and slower Experimental. A little laggy for live producing faster stuff, but that's what the BPM slider was invented for. 😉
