Would absolutely love that but I’m not sure. With the interface I dunno how well it would work as an AUV3. I imagine if something like Egoist can work as an audio unit than Samplr could too but who knows.
Just stay alive.
Hi @supadom,
What type of things do you want to do with Samplr as AUV3?
Probably not, while he’s still employed by Apple.
If Apple completely killed off IAA, then AUv3 maybe considered as a compatiblity upgrade by Apple, and they may then allow him to do it 🤞
I don’t believe Apple is preventing him. He has done Samplr work while at Apple. I suspect the issue is that it would be a lot of work and he may have other priorities. (Note that the monetary return might be so small on a project like this to not inspire one to give up one’s non-work time for those for whom coding isn’t also a hobby).
IIRC Marcos Alonso stated when he got the job with Apple that employees were only able to upgrade their own apps for compatibility fixes.
He did a more-than-compatibility-fixes release for the last one and even added touch bar support. Converting to AUv3 (given IAA’s depreciation ) would be a compatibility fix. I would be surprised if his boss would prevent him from converting to AUv3 if it was something he really wanted to do. I could be wrong.
I agree. IAA is on the way out so AU would definitely be considered as maintenance.
As for the remuneration I think Samplr is a love child and considering how much affection it receives by many musicians must make it very special to the dev.
Last time I got in touch to let him know that Apple are purging the AppStore from older apps he was genuinely surprised and said that it’s probably about time to di it.
Who knows.
To me it’s not just what it can do in terms of sound but how it encourages the user to play the waveform as if it was a musical instrument. It is very unique in that.
The sound can be quite easily replicated in Drambo or Fieldscaper (even if IMO not as musically) but the missing link is always the massive touchable waveform with the ability to switch modes with ease.
It’s a work of genius really.
You need to add another option:
"It's one of my biggest wishes" 😂
would be nice, but probably won't happen.
Never really appealed to me, tho I've tried, so not really a need for me.
In terms of playable waveforms, there is Spacecraft tho it's granular and maybe Loopy Pro could have something like that down the line.
SamplR’s appeal to those that appreciate it, is the flow rather than any particular sound it can create. It is a very special, playable , unique instrument with amazing touch interface that is compelling to many but not to everyone.
I am not saying everyone needs to love it, just that there isn’t really anything else one can interact with in the same way…and that way is it’s appeal.
It seems to me that Beatsurfing2 bears some resemblance to Samplr, though probably a second cousin rather than a sibling. Still, one to watch. I think @Michael could nail the user interaction special sauce if he tried, but i suppose the MIDI side of LP is calling…
Its most likely contractual. They're pretty strict about the development of anything for personal gain that can be remotely tied to anything apple does. If it existed before apple, it's fine, but for upkeep only, not new features.
I know people that got letters from Apple legal for adding things to their GitHub during their employment. Nothing came of it other than "you need to show this to us 1st and get approval". I get it tho. They wanna make sure you're not using their IP for profit. They also don't want to to come up with the next billion dollar idea secretly and split. They do kinda own you. I'm amazing someone didn't have to donate their healthy liver or pancreas to Steve.
Why don't you ask him if it will go AUv3 instead of asking us... he will know and we won't
Because I’m evil like that!!! 👹😈🪬
Seriously though….just wanted to see if anyone else is bugging the dev about it and I’m not the only Samplr addict stuck in the past. Also, I asked him so many times, over the years already, that I have to find alternative ways to do it! 😂
If you’re stuck in the past, do it properly... keep an old iPad for old gems. At least this is my solution to this problem. Mini2 on iTrack Dock for Samplr, Seekbeats, Patterning and Sector
I don’t need to. Samplr works perfectly well on latest hardware and software. I’m just fed up with starting it individually when loading sessions in Audiobus.
We're in the process of integrating AUv3 in Remixlive. If you'd like to participate in the development of the feature, don't hesitate to hit me up, i'd love to exchange with you about thoughts and ideas for it!
Great, please create a thread and post the link here. You’ll probably get more traction/visibility that way.
I've seen the same stated by another developer who went to work for Apple.
It's weird in Samplr's case, because the app highlights so much of what makes the iPad unique. It would be great for marketing if given the proper resources - you'd think that Apple would want it as their own app.
This absolutely does not exclude the maintenance update to AUV3.
I’m not asking for it to start making brownies.
It’s interesting. I absolutely don’t get on with spacecraft. I totally don’t know what all the hype is about 😉
Agree. It’s a touch UI instrument and it deserves the whole screen. If I need it on multiple tracks then I simply record it as I would do with a guitar.
Samplr must live forever, so yes AUV3 would be wonderful, even in current form.
Nevertheless, still would like automated effects, more flexible compression and eq, and improved project filing system, and a simple mixdown export to audioshare, and for sample list, access to Files and audioshare, and, and……
One has to imagine that the dev knows way more about the interest in SamplR and potential upside (I.e. sales) of updating to AUv3 than a survey here would tell him.
Also, Apple is not simply going to remove apps just because they are old and without warning. Apple revised the criteria and it doesn’t apply to apps that continue to have sales.
I think the whole thing as an au wouldn’t be that ideal, but the individual engines as modular plugins would be really interesting…
