Favorites for cello / double bass synth patches?

I usually samples/SFZ for cello and/or double bass sounds, but I recently found that I can better control resonance, filters, etc when I use a synth app to approximate a string sound--and that can help me sculpt the spot in a mix for the bass register. What are your favorite synths for emulating deep string sounds?

If no one is going to respond, I'll put my thoughts down... I don't find any synth to duplicate a good cello Rompler patch like the Cello in Thumbjam. SWAM has modeled the Cello and Double Bass and sells them for $30 each but they sound real.

For a synth that offers string sounds, I like Korg's iWaveStation. But iWaveStation and Thumbjam are IAA apps. Someone will probably offer up a synth... I wonder if Analog, FM, Buchla, Wavetable or other synth type will have an advantage.

i remember looking for a decent Cello in all the usual SF2 packages and most have vibrato baked into the samples and with pitch shining that's just a huge no-no for me. No one plays like that with vibrato tracking along with pitch changes.

For the real purist: Check out the "Tina Guo Cello" library for StaffPad on IOS product. She get's it for making sample recordings that sound real. It's an art getting the vibrato start point just right to sound human.

These are early attempts of mine at strings. The first is really meant for long sustained drones sort of things. The second is a bit more playable. Would like to come back to these and make them a bit more useable and friendly.

    Woah, Tiny Guo! That's legit.

Here's her with system of a down frontman

I've been playing cello for about a year and the better I get at it the less realistic it seems a synth can ever really capture it

  • Excellent... There will be great clues to how to dial in a string sound since Drambo is a modular synth
so each stage will be represented and tweaking is allowed. I remember faux-strings was pretty stunning.
I need to get "Fluffy-cello" and evaluate and maybe try tweaking it too. For me the softer attack and vibrato rate and delay are key to sounding human on the slow romantic styles. A crisp attack is needed to sound funky.

+1 to all apps mentioned. Also swam once in awhile has a sale and drops them to $20 a pop.

  • I love a good cello sound. I keep coming back to the KApro Cello patch in Module Pro.

It works especially well if it can peek in-and-out from the other instruments.

This uses the KApro Cello patch:

Wow, excellent! This is the quality content I was looking for!

And thx everyone else for the tips!

I love Faux-strings Ben! I have a piece I’m working on now that uses this. Amazing paired with some FAC Alteza!

  • Some that I’ve found that i find flexible and shape-able:

    Baervaag, Dany Pad
    Polywave, Cello

I like Thumbjam, but I also like using a synth to do a cello-like sound. It gives the idea of a cello when mixed into a song, but I don’t bother trying to make it realistic.

I use a triangle wave into a reverb into chorus (yes, chorus after reverb). Slow attack, longish release, and some vibrato either on the mod wheel, or fading in with an envelope.

Ableton’s Operator does a grand job. Moog’s Grandmother can overdrive its mixer for some sweet breakup that adds even more character.
