Oh, as if there wasn't enough to try, I also like ZenBeats. Possibly one of the most consistent cross-platform apps out there. I haven't tried it with plugins, but it does handle MIDI Channels fine -- after you find the hidden advanced MIDI setup. It's biggest downside is slow start-up. Again, I haven't tried it with a plugin.
The default Reaper theme is kind of ugly (particularly the MIDI editor), but I'm rather fond of the themes from this guy:

I use Alternate and like it a lot.
Also for reaper the following youtube channels are excellent:

If you're starting off then this playlist is very useful:
Then IDDQDMusic and Kenny G both do great tutorials on getting to grips with Reaper. IDDQD's tutorials on MIDI editing in Reaper are highly recommended.
You'll also want to install SWS Extensions:
And ReaPack
https://reapack.com/
Which is a package manager for Reaper.
One of Reaper's things is that it has a ton of user created plugins (if you want to get into DSP stuff, Reaper is pretty easy imo). Some of the good ones are:

https://github.com/JoepVanlier/JSFX

https://forum.cockos.com/showthread.php?t=213501 (its just a really good parametric equalizer - no big deal)
There are others.
Bump, because Xmas break is coming, and I'm inclined to do some music production woodshedding during that time.
Since I started this thread, I've continued to use Akai MPC Key 61 / MPC 2 as my main platform, with some iOS esp. for MIDI guitar.
And I go to Reaper for VST plugins that don't work on MPC.
As I continue to do some song-writing, I have a hunch that a workflow with a great piano roll and smart use of transport controls and real keys could be productive path while staying intuitive and inspiring.
Have you Reaper folks found the piano roll to be a good way to compose? And does it compare well with other DAWs setups?
Thanks,
P.S. (TBH, I've even thought of buying FL Key 49 to try out that integrated workflow with FL Studio, though I don't know FL studio.)
resurrecting an old thread....
i've been working with Reaper for a couple of years now, it did take a while to get my head around how Reaper works
i would gather you are familiar with Realearn by helgoboss one of the community coders, who created both realearn and playtime1... with playtime 2 in alpha/beta phase
as an example to what i have been able to create as far as routing is concerned in reaper with Realearn being the glue that makes everything accessible by midi... has really been a labour of love.. to create a template that houses 256 samples operate x4 maschine instances... parallel send channels, all simultaneously being able to record the output is quite a feat for someone who has only been in this audio enviroment for a short time....
thus my venturing into the ios area to see whats available... to integrate the best in terms of what available for a performance type workflow.... loopy pro is something special which i have yet to fully integrate with Reaper... having macos 11.2.3 makes things possible with the loopy pro app as a audio feed into reaper...
if one can envisage the way they wish to work and achieve... Reaper&Realearn is certainly a great tool needed to give rise to the possibilities!!
heres a little demo i share often of the template i work with in reaper
