Drambo for sampling and beat making

New Drambo user here. Been using it for the last couple of days and I think this is the best sampler groovebox on the iOS platform. In this jam, I utilized parameter locks, step component functions, and sampling directly into the flex sampler via Novation Audiohub 2x4. I am getting a feeling that this app will soon replace the MPC one and other equipment in my studio. I would love to see how others have setup Drambo with external gear for beat-making and whatnot.

My setup: iPad Pro 2018 - Novation audiohub 2x4 - LaunchControl XL

  • That’s a nice track ! I’m so tempted by Drambo…

I think it’s worth it. I haven’t even used the modular side of it. What blew my mind is the step components feature where you can place random functions at specific location in a chain and only the events post the random function is randomised… I am just scratching the surface…

Really nice track. Congrats on getting on with Drambo and realizing it’s potential and power.

I’m currently enjoying pairing Drambo with the Syntakt:

Drambo is simply the best sequencer for external kit and works great as a sampler for accompanying playback as well.

  • @supadupa555 Man, that was soooo good. I am so jealous of anybody that can create this style of music with samples. Also, there is nothing funkier to me than the open high hat of a pitched down break like that. PSSSHHHHHT!

Nice chill vibe. Do you use Drambo to sequence external gear only? The piano sounds wonderful? Is it an auv3 plug? I subscribed to your channel. Lots of stuff to go through

Thanks for Listening, drez! I pitch down anything by instinct

Thank you for the Sub 🙏🏼💕

For this particular track the piano is a sample i pulled from some PurePiano noodling. I tend to use Drambo as a sequencer, sampler, instrument and accent for supporting my musical creations. It’s so flexible and fits in nicely with however i work, and this is why i love it so much since it is so flexible and adaptive.

It’s one of the few apps i use which gets me into that flow state i seek when playing.

I'm going to get another LC XL.

    Great beat!

Most of the music I make is sample based hip hop and now it’s done exclusively in Drambo. Previously Nanostudio 2 hosting Egoist was my go to (ableton before I left PC).

I have a couple different workflows. Sometimes it’s all entered into the step sequencer and Flexi sample offset is p-locked, other times I host Koala, and I built a sample slicer that I really enjoy.

    https://patchstorage.com/oneknob-sampler/

My launchpad plays really nice - love the pads.

  • @bcrichards I always love when I see you drop something on your instagram. You are a wonder. ANOTHER JEALOUSY OF MINE!

What I find so crazy is that so many of you guys are hiphoppy types, and you are using a "modular" type system to write it with. That is truly the power of drambo. It is completely not an MPC

  • @bcrichards I went through your walkthrough on Drambo 2.0 when I got the app. Nice beats and video. What are you using to make those videos? They are trippy. I’ll check out one knob sampler once I get free time. Thanks for that and the walkthrough videos!!!

  • Nice! I too use Drambo solely as a sample or Auv3 synth groovebox. Haven’t touched the deep modular stuff save for adding fx, filters, and the usual to tracks. I doubt I will do much with that side of things. People need to know it can be as simple or as complicated as you want. You want it simple? Put a Flexi sampler on every track and just go to town with your samples, mix an Au synth in there. You don’t have to “build” anything if you don’t want to.

  • @drez thanks man I always appreciate the support. @supadupa555 I use capcut now. it's free and actually pretty capable. I just screen record stuff off of Youtube or elsewhere and then 'chop them up' into little bits in the iOS photo app, then import. There's a feature called 'Match Cut' that lets you add snapping points while listening to an audio track in the project. then beat syncing video or images is super simple.

  • Cool tune.

Need to route xequence pads as shown, to multi drambo tracks as shown. To flexi samplers per track.

Is the midi record ( from a midi audio unit window ) still applicable, hence it wont work for my setup ( as its routed outside of tracks )

It can trigger ( when tracks are set to recieve and not transpose )

    but wont record midi.

Each track also seems to disregard my midi channels set in xequence and also selected midi channels in Drambo tracks. Other midi channel made pads will trigger tracks I dont want to trigger etc

but will work midi channel wise when I use xequence in aum routing via Drambo network.

But obviously still wont record plus I cant see both screens etc to even use.

The logical thing would be to just use drambo in aum but always keep getting a message of ( please select Drambo folder' on my ipad' location to gain access. Everytime I open drambo window and nothing seems available ( samples etc )

but only happens for the audioMFX version of Drambo ( the only version which might perhaps work )

  • To summerise.

It would be like using a launchpad set to rows of different midi channels, with rows of notes per channel to trigger flexi samplers on different tracks

but think Drambo still needs the record button activated ( on midi audio unit window ) and only possible per track ?

So a xequence needed for each flexi sampler ?

And then if using aum instead. What is the message' please select Drambo folder' on my ipad' location to gain access

for the mfx version of a Drambo mfx audio unit, in Aum?

  • Welcome fellow Drambonaut! Left you a like and another new sub. 👍

This is to allow the AUv3 Drambo to access the same files as the stand-alone. Use the Files browser to select the Drambo folder On My iPad, or in iCloud, whichever you're using. I don't recall how you activate it, maybe by selecting Open or Files from the Drambo hamburger menu. You only need to do this once.

Also, for routing a MIDI generator plug-in inside Drambo, use a MIDI Output module and select MIDI Feedback, not MIDI Out. Then select MIDI Feedback in the track input settings – tap on the track object on the left. I cannot help you on recording multiple tracks at once, though.

You should look into this YouTube Channel to see just how far down the Drambo+Hardware one person can go:

    https://youtube.com/@moderndayblue?si=D5Eq463j3-2mqyE9

@gravitas (his YouTube handle is “ModernDayBlue”) has crafted his own unique synth and drum machine in Drambo and delivers amazing live performances using his set up and shares videos of them.

  • I should be able to use Drambo in aum now btw ( its just a 3rd sampler ipad etc ) and perhaps some mappings like thermo might not work in drambo. Perhaps the mapping need

But hope someone can tell me if I can use xuquence as described in Drambo.

    Thanks.> @uncledave said:

    Cheers Dave.

    Remember midi feedback.

    Will test.

If I cant route a xequence so pads are multi midi out. Like an external controller would be.

Then I will have to use aum ( but also on a 2nd ipad now/what im asking )

Which means to gain what I need.

Probably my voice to multi flexi samplers ( so I can still use arps to sequencers ) upon triggering and the xequence pads may aswell be an octave range per track.

Means my live jam is different to my modular DAW by a lot.

Now a 2nd ipad isnt in Drambo. So all synth patches are made in aum.

    Just started using ipad again.

So always ideas, then another idea and nothing gets complete but completing from now and choosing to not actually use certain hosts is a faff on steroids ( synth patches needing to be made in drambo to gain automation )

Unless I just choose to not let it be.

I suppose I can save patches to au instead.

  • You select open.

    Theres no files to choose.

So open activates the mfx Drambo and is ok from then on.

Did you navigate to the Drambo folder in the Files browser? Have you already opened Drambo stand-alone? That may be required to complete the installation.

He has gone deep into Drambo and uses hardware to solve the tiny knob problem in a Drambo rack.

  • Can anyone solve this problem.

Xequence can map to Drambo Flexi sampler record.

but not to an MFX Drambo.

Try tapping "Remove" on both Flexi Samplers first, then try again. When I set up a test like yours, I somehow recorded a very small silent sample in the MFx Flexi. This made the REC button appear to work like a momentary button even though it was a toggle. Once I fixed that everything worked as expected and I was able to record in both instances from the same Xequence AU Pad press.

Cant get it to work again on an mfx ( only a regular Drambo )

You can see the midi seems ok etc.

Its for a sample and mic template but wont know if its good until I start mapping.

  • Not sure why im bothering lol

Im just trying to make use of 3 ipads and loads of controllers and tbh.

Dont really like the type of music it will make live etc.
