New iPad aka Life without a home button
Any tips on using and switching between apps on a new iPad without a physical home button?
Hopefully I’ll get used to it but things like double tapping to switch apps (mainly IAA in AUM) seem potentially more cumbersome than on my older iPad.
Cheers

Other than the usual swipe up from the bottom to select apps, you can also just swipe left and right on the small grey bar at the bottom. This will swipe between active apps which is the quickest.
Just takes time to get used to I guess, I wouldn’t want to go back to a button now personally
What about the touch assist button that you can choose to have displayed on the screen? It acts like a home button and gives you a menu of shortcuts that you can customise. Would that work for you?
I'd say just learn the swipe-up gestures.
Takes about a couple weeks to get used to, but then again I've used the gestures for so long, even on iPads with home buttons, that I barely ever touched the home button on my Mini 5.
Instead of reaching my right hand all the way over to the home button, I just flick up from the bottom. I don't even miss the home button on my 12.9" iPad Pro. (Hint: to take an iPad without a home button, double-tap its screen.)
I second this. Another member suggested it in another thread, some weeks back. I use it even though I have a button, as it's made the experience even more tactile.
Sometimes a bit of shuffling is necessary, dependent on the app being used. Otherwise the little circle can obscure important on-screen functions. Other than that, a total revelation
4 finger swipe left or right, same way I do it on the MBP. Maybe it’s three fingers, can’t remember now.
you can configure that shortcuts menu to have just the home button option. then the on screen home button works just like the physical button. first thing i did on the new ipad. :^)
actually it's easier than that now. just configure "custom actions" for single/double/long tap in Settings > Accessibility > Touch > Assistive touch. i use home/app switcher/lock screen.
also, if you have a wireless keyboard, command-tab is quite useful.
Thanks everyone.
I’ve used the touch assist before with an iPad with a broken home button.
I’ll probably just try and adapt to using gestures to begin with...
Still using my olde iPad Air for now while I wait for my usb C to headphone klagnut to arrive.
You can also consider getting one of their keyboard cover cases, which would give you the ability to switch between apps by pressing Command+Tab at the same time, then keep holding down the Command key while tapping on the Tab key. That's how I use mine.
Don’t worry it will soon become second nature.
Best tip I can give you is for shutting down. Quickest way- settings - General - swipe to the bottom + off. I kept taking screenshots trying to use the buttons 😕
Yeah this is probably the most annoying aspect, but the dongle pretty much deals with that.
The gestures themselves you will get used to in no time.
