Yes there's a more recent one

There is a kind of 'randomize velocity' thing in DM1 but it just made a huge mess, so didn't use it. Maybe I should try different settings. Also needs better stereo widening- I pan some of the drum parts and add reverb, but in future I will use a mastering app on the drum track instead of only doing stereo widening on the entire mix.
Of course you can always create your drum track on desktop and bring it into ipad, but I think we need something that is editable at every stage of the process.
I have no doubt that Different Drummer can create devastating metal drums. It came out of research I was doing where you play so fast it seems slow (Hyperchords) so there is a huge range of expression where it's just plain fast. What's cool is how you can mix slow with fast using the Tie Wave. Where the tie wave goes positive it unleashes whatever beat value you've set and then chills it out when the tie wave goes negative. Since you can import your own samples there is no limit on sounds though the stock samples could use some improvement. If you go the MIDI route then it's a matter of the synth/drum machine you use. In addition, in DD you can give drums tonal variation using the Note Wave and put them in a key and even vary key on beats using the Composer so you can do things regular drums can't usually do. The Dynamics wave give it more expression for intense accents. And then there is the Rest Wave which governs the absence of beats. Finally there is the Panning Wave that can give drums impressive spacial movement.
I recorded some metal drums tonight using several different Soundfonts, mainly to compare them out of my own curiosity. The midi pattern was created in DrumStudio with different velocities. I output the midi from that to BS-16i (set as dry as possible with reverb turned all the way down) and then recorded the audio in Loopy via AB. There's a small amount of silence at the beginning of each track because I output straight from loopy to soundcloud.

If anyone has any other metal drum kit soundfonts that they want me to add, just let me to know.
@Coloobar; thanks, that was great, I definately liked the first example best.
Yeah, you can tell it uses multi-velocity samples instead of just playing the same sample louder like in some of the other fonts. However, for a metal sound I think the kick drum might be too thin, and overall it's sonically missing some of the high end (possibly using a lower bit rate?) The Slavo kit would be a better straight out of the box acoustic kit for metal. Ideally it would be best to put together a custom kit from all of them. For me, I would try combining either Sonic Implants or GoldDrum's snare with the Douglas' ride and high hat, Evandro's toms, and Slavo's kick and cymbals, I've also found a few more drum kits that I can try out and add tonight.
I added 4 new Soundfont drum kits for comparison. The Bluejay 24-bit kit is divine... I think I found my drum kit.
I'm going to have to ask the DrumStudio folks why the cymbals and rides are getting cut off. Seems like the app is sending a midi off signal that crops the samples.

I use DrumPerfect with imported samples. I don't have any examples, but it works wonderfully for me.

Sounding good! Don't know for sure though until it's in the mix, but at least it's sounding pretty human.
Sorry about the cumbersome YouTube vids, here is my soundcloud

If anyone is interested, the Drums.sf2 soundfont containing three of the kits I demoed can be found in the 1st post here:
http://forum.audiob.us/discussion/1400/soundfonts/p1 The Standard and Jazz kits both sound awesome.
My DrumPerfect Metal Kit.
I used Seraph Samples.
Seraph Samples + Analogue Drums Big Mono Samples
As someone who LOVES Different Drummer, I wouldn't recommend it for this purpose.
Also, don't underestimate Jam maestro's kit.

Jam Maestro is a good suggestion - FYI, I believe dev indicated that a couple of those kits are from Derek Buddemeyer and some other free sample kits that get passed around the web a bit (the Slingerland and Ruff Rider kits also). I think it's either the Metal or the Pro kit, whatever it's called, that has 4 different toms, and that one sounds great. As much as I love Jam Maestro, I have a little trouble navigating in there for making drum tracks, though I'm sure I could get it to work if I spent the time on it.
Derek Buddemeyer announced here and on KVR that he was close to releasing a new app that's like ezdrummer for iOS for rock/metal. He even had audio demos he posted. But I think that was sometime last year and haven't heard anything since then.
In the meantime, couldn't you just import samples and midi files from programs like ezdrummer into BM2?
Finally! Rock Dm is on the bus!
Yes, Rock DM has to be up there for any rock or metal tracks now!

Especially with the different styles that allow you to take a basic pattern and play it more aggressively. I'm no metal expert, but at times it seems like the difference between a "rock" and "metal" drum part maybe more to do with tempo and aggressiveness than the arrangement itself. That's really the one thing that makes Rock DM unique.
Here's Derek's announcement about Drum Session (basically ezdrummer for iOS) from November: http://www.kvraudio.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=5576368#p5576368
He said he was partnering with Blue Mangoo (iFretless apps).
I wonder what happened as it sounded close to being done but there hasn't been any news since December:

"Getting closer with Drum Session....almost done recording and trimming and mapping...then it gets shipped out the the code guru at the Blue Mangoo"
http://www.vguitarforums.com/smf/index.php?topic=10021.msg72066#msg72066
"Pretty busy on finishing up my drum app (Drum Session for iPad) it will be kind of an EZDrummer/Superior Drummer for iPad."
Well, Derek had some health issues earlier this year and I've used free samples and loops from him a fair amount, so I'll gladly cut him a break if there's a cool project he was working on that didn't get done. But seriously, an app with his samples in it coded by the guy who does the iFretless stuff, that's something I'll want to own whether it's this year or 2016!
EZ or Session drummer app for IOS? Where do I sign up??

Ask Derek Buddemeyer or Blue Mangoo (iFretless)
This looks like a good way to go if you have Beatmaker 2:
https://www.soundcloud.com/buddemeyer72/modern-rock-drums-2-bm2-kit
I went searching just the other day over at Blue Mangoo facebook page and no news of anything impending still. I am still thinking it will might well be worth my waiting however.

Yeah that'll be a great day... I've dreamed about drag and drop functionality with drum loops loops on iOS. In the meantime, from the description it seems like the free BM2 kit and loop packages are one in the same with this upcoming app.
Could I use that kit an those loops inside of Cubasis or would I have to also get beatmaker to use the loops?
It's only for BM2, but Derek has put up a link to all the samples on KVR so you might be able to put together your own. I think he's using the Mapex drum kit samples. I actually remapped the whole drum kit so it's compliant with the key mapping of ezdrummer. Now I can use all my midi loops with it in BM2. There's still no way to audition loops though which kind of sucks.
Finally finished...

Hi! I've made a drum app for my metal jams. It's called Drumss. You can build a song from drum loops there. And it supports AUv3, so you can use it with AUM or Loopy Pro for advanced live jamming
