Apparently iOS version is the desktop code 🤓
And desktop has over 300 presets, hopefully this is true of mobile version
... Ok, I didn't see this price coming. 😀 No Crystalline for me then. On a positive note, based on my experience with the desktop trial I think the touch interface of iOS will really fit its unique UI.
OK… I got a gift card for Father’s Day from my 1 day late daughter.
Yes. 300 presets: 73 factory and then 36 Artist preset collections with 8-9 on average in each. WARNING: if you are a preset type… the font for the labels is very small and when you scroll the lists it select everywhere you touch. There is one of the vertical scroll widgets on the side of each list. They could benefit from a larger font for those that need reading glasses but don’t use them.
Very unusual interface but the controls really make big changes
As opposed to some where the sliders make small changes end-to-end.
So, I would probably just learn to dial it in but I was impressed with the “drum” specific presets on some drums: nice range from Gated Snare to Kicks… presets type wouldn’t expect to see in a Reverb product. So, not just the room/spaces of an IR type reverb like Altipace but also concerned with Gating, EQ, etc.
$30? It’s a $30 reverb for sure but as a gift it’s less painful. I don’t begrudge them holding to the value of their app. I really hope to see more product from these folks after they gifted me Magic Dice and Magic Switch I regret the purchase price less.
Still, reverb apps are a crowded market for us… and yet I keep enjoyIng this weeks model. Go figure. It takes me and my music to new places.
Keep this one on your list for sales events and jump on it. I’ll compare it to my usual reverbs over the next week and let you know where it wins and where it comes in 2nd and why.
Now the big test will be trying to match FAC Alteza for the Cloud Reverb goodness.
Or doing that Blackhole space vibe… a preset mentions Blackhole. We shall see in a shoot out.
It has a Light/Dark toggle button at the upper left corner.
I didn’t demo Crystalline when it came out recently on desktop but the big selling point other than the sound was it’s built in ducking.
AU$46?
Ah... no sale.
Excellent point… the ducking is like a build-in sidechain compressor effect. I haven’t had a punchy source yet where it would kick in. I’m generally all strings and choirs and morphing pads with the odd drum app like Mid-East Drummer. I’ll try something punchy and compare to other reverbs.
UPDATE: I found an AUM project with a busy "drum circle" and some string/pad apps. The ducking on the master bus really helps pull the drums out of the misty reverb quickly and with precise control while continuing to flavor the strings with some reverb hall sound... less than before but it's a quick and easy control that saves a lot of extra bussing in AUM.
It’s a hard pass for me. Not at that price.
How does it seem dsp wise? Seem to remember the free ones were quite heavy…
I’d be happy to pay this kinda price if it offers significant improvements over Blackhole and TB Reverb (my go tos). Not in any rush though!
£25.99 in the UK. I'm more than happy to pay that price, it's a bargain.
Seems to be a fair price, I think we need to get used to the idea that as ipad moves closer to parity with your MacBook/Desktop experience that apps will hopefully become more “pro” and their prices will reflect this.
I wonder if the iOS app is Mac M1 compatible?
Many were demanding the premium price that comes with desktop quality… I didn’t because i would not be able to afford stuff like that.
However I put it on the watchlist on appsliced. Maybe down the road later this year
Im glad they had the guts to try establishing a higher premium price. Hope it works for them, but knowing this market…however, I think it’s good to have to make more careful choices instead of being able to buy everything. You’re more likely to place higher value on it and therefore get more optimal use out of it.
Edit: oh, it’s only $30 US. Still the going rate for premium stuff.
If higher prices become the norm that will put many apps out of the reach of musicians on lower incomes. Not such a good thing.
I think a lot of people get into iOS music making because the cost of getting into it is affordable. It would be a shame if that went away. Hopefully, it won't.
Desktop plugins are often over $100.
A $30 plugin is still really cheap. It's just not realistic to expect everything to cost $10 or less.
Here's a video that showcases what is unique and different with this reverb:
The FabFilter stuff on iOS is on the more 'expensive' side but it's quality thru and thru and I've not regretting getting them.
This new BabyThing is also available on the iPhone and is as far as I know the only reverb on iOS/iPad that allows tempo-synced delay and reverb time.
Who knows maybe they'll do a bundle discount when more of their apps are available and getting this at the current price may reduce the bundle price, but this is just pure speculation on my part.
I did get the BabyAudio Parallel Aggressor for free thanks to Novation and I would not mind having it on iOS as well.
Time will tell if/when I get this one...
Cheers!
I’ll wait for a sale. I spent $30 on DDMF’s MagicVerb and never use it. AltiSpace, Blackhole, and FAC Alteza all seem to keep me quite happy for now.
That is, of course unless someone has a convincing video or example of why I’d “need” this?
There are still plenty of very good choices at lower price levels. Some of them even downright rival the more expensive stuff (FAC, brambos, etc). Just a matter of doing a little research and buying a little more carefully.
At the moment, yes.
But that's why I said "If higher prices become the norm". If...
This specific plugin can currently be bought for 45 EUR for the desktop, even less if you spotted the various extra vouchers that were flying around after launch. Which is much closer to the iOS price of 30 than your generic desktop price of 100+.
I absolutely support them charging whatever they want, of course. I hope they will be successful. But an interesting consequence is that the closer iOS prices get to (promotional) desktop prices, the more realistic alternatives desktop apps become, at least for me (as someone who uses both platforms). So, for example, iOS Crystalline doesn't only have to beat the much cheaper iOS alternatives, but at this price it also has to compete with some of my desktop alternatives. Quite a tough ask in my case. But YMMV.
Another video that's worth checking out, mostly explores the beat-synced sounds:
It doesn't matter how much desktop grade pro apps come to iOS.
At the end, the problem is that we don't have a real, full-fledged DAW on iOS. And this has as a consequence that we consider too high prices that on desktop are considered a bargain.
If I get Crystaline in desktop at 49 dollars, I have the option of using this for mixing and mastering, with the powerful automation/modulation tools, and the reliability of a diverse range of well tested and supported DAWs: Ableton Live, Bitwig, FL Studio, Reason, Reaper, Studio One, MOTU Digital Performer, Tracktion Waveform, Logic Pro or Cubase.
Not only that, to do this task of mixing, I can create in my Mac any complex audio setup, combining various audio interfaces with dedicated and well optimized drivers. I can do loopback audio between apps. I can create an infinite number of virtual MIDI ports to connect hosts.
But on iOS, my main use are modular live sessions in AUM, only to have some fun. For this use, an effect that you will use integrated in a modular setup, but you can't integrate in your mixing workflow, 30 dollars is too much.
Even more, as a fun and cool live modular setup, Bitwig is incredibly more powerful and with a lot more of features than AUM.
So at the end, it's like spending 30 dollars in a plugin that you will eventually use in the rare occasion in which you prefer to do a quick session sitting on your couch.
When a company like Baby Audio brings pro and desktop grade tools, they don't have the fault of this perception of the iOS ecosystem.
This only can change if Apple is determined to finally pushing the iPad as a professional music tool.
By porting Logic Pro, by eliminating limitations like only be able to use a single audio interface.
With the release of the AUv3 format, some desktop developers such as Fabfilter, Eventide or Toneboosters came to iOS.
But the scene will never never explode as a real alternative to desktop until we also have a desktop grade DAW, in addition to all these desktop pro grade plugins.
Oooh this one is going to be fun.
Considering a cheap pedal is like $80. For modular fun, this might be worth it. I def enjoy the Fabfilter stuff, if we're talking about pricing. Might get the demo for desktop first. I really enjoyed the freebies they gave out.
Are AU parameters exposed in this? @McD or anyone who got it?
I spent half an hour testing it out. It's pretty unique and very cool IMO.
It's a beautiful and very useable reverb. For me would be a great reverb to add to guitars and synths, and also use for special effects with the beat-syncing. It wouldn't be my choice for vocals since DDMF MagicVerb is pretty much unbeatable there, and Pro-R is also very good on voices.
@richardyot thanks for that detailed break down. Looking forward to giving this a whirl.
I got it as I liked the look of the beat sync option and because it comes with lots of presets. Another one to put into the very large drawer full of reverbs I have for when I finally get to writing some music with real instruments.
I guess I could have waited until it was on sale but I appreciate that Baby Audio gave some free stuff away first and want to support their first paid launch. Maybe down the line I’ll benefit from a cheaper bundle once a few more apps are released.
@auxmux lots of parameters are exposed, I didn’t see if they covered everything but all of the things I took an interest in were controllable. Means you should be able to do some pretty funky stuff with the reverse/freeze etc.
