Wabi-Sabi / The perfection of imperfeCtion
I'm surprised to say that although I have unwittingly practiced wabi-sabi for many years, I have never come across the Japanese term or philosophy until tonight. I post this video because many of us here, I think, are thwarted by the pursuit of perfection.
All who know my stuff here acknowledge how prolific I seem to be. 653 tracks in 50 months to be specific. That has boiled down to about an album’s worth of decent stuff a month. There is only one explanation for this… wabi-sabi. I don’t seek perfection, ever. As the iOS years have flown by I actually have come closer to something like perfection. Midi editing helps, compression helps, reverb helps, better acoustic AUs help, presets help, especially those by @Spidericemidas. ARPs help, Lumbeat JazzDrummer helps. Bpm increases or decreases help.
My actual playing time is probably less than 30 minutes a week. It always goes like this… Maybe I feel like making music or maybe I don’t. I turn on my flexible lamp. I remove the cloth that covers my keyboard and turn it on. I place my 12.9 Pro2 on the music stand and sit down. I plug in the cck and headphones. I open Cubasis and duplicate my 3 track template. I open the duplicated template. Generally it’s PurePiano on track one but sometimes I’ll select a synth or strings, or even an acoustic bass.
I select a bpm more often than not these days. Then I play for around a minute. Something may or may not jump out at me that I will use. Whatever.
I start recording. After 2 1/2 to 7 minutes I stop. I almost never do another take. Good or not so good that’s what I have to work with for the next few hours. I don't judge it, and frankly,I generally don’t know how good it is. Good or not so good, almost 100% of the time, it works out with varying degrees of success and I post it.
One thing is always true. It’s never perfect. Wabi-sabi. It never fails me.

Thank you for this!
To me, nature is the best example for imperfection, deliberately adding flaws to its own creations to enable improvement.
@LinearLineman I’ve been stuck, unable to get anything going past switching on and fiddling for hours, for much of this year. This isn’t a problem I have had in the past.
Your post made me realize that my best work came from taking one small piece and building on it, just to see where it goes.
It also made me realize I should just release those 99% finished tracks.
Thank you!
@rs2000 you’re welcome, brother. @mistercharlie thank you, mate, that’s exactly what I hoped some would hear.
