Oxi One Sequencer/Midi Controller - My Review
Hello everyone! After lurking and learning from the community for a while, I figured I give back by providing a personal review on the Oxi One sequencer.
Who I am as a musician
Like many of you, I enjoy making music as a hobby. I’ve made a few tracks using Cubasis and AUM. In addition, I love jamming with friends and it is one of my main ways of expressing myself musically.
Why the Oxi One
I realize that I may get some flak for this, but after buying and trying Drambo, Loopy Pro, a bunch of other looping options like Koala and L7 and LK. I came to the realization that for me, making music solely on a screen is not that great. I completely understand this works for many people, but I find that the process of opening screens and UIs slows down my creative flow. Although this doesn’t really apply to when I’m making complete tracks via Cubasis, it’s a huge mood killer when jamming with friends. And while a traditional midi controller is also a viable solution, the lack of sequencing abilities brings me back to the same problem: having to open an app on my iPad to record a loop/sequence, especially when jamming.
**Oxi One vs other controllers/sequencers **
You may ask, why the Oxi One compared to other sequencers/midi controllers? This is definitely up to personal preference. However, in my case I own the Keystep Pro, an Arturia minilab, and most recently a Launchpad X. I was trying to find a controller that worked best with my iPad and while all of them are great, the lack of sequencing options brought me back to the same issue: Having to use my iPad as the main sequencer. Please do note that I looked into using Drambo/loop pro in collaboration with my midi controllers to act as a hybrid iPad/hardware sequencer. There are many great tutorials out there, however the lack of native support and jumping through hoops was a dealbreaker for me. Now the KSP is an exception to this, it’s an amazing controller with 4 tracks for sequencing. Yet the one row of push pads limited my ability to modify notes or create chords while jamming live (you can record loops, I just found it limiting and not a great experience).
I also looked at the Deluge, Squarp Hapax, Polyend Play. All of them are great options, I’m just not a fan of using samples so that eliminated the Polyend Play. I’m still considering getting a Deluge at some point due to some inspiring videos on YouTube. And I ordered the Squarp Hapax! We shall see if it’s a better alternative to the Oxi One.
Purchasing Experience
Timeline:
Bought it on Monday June 6th for 654€ (~$690)
Tried to cancel my order on June 8th due to choosing the Hapax instead. However, they did not have an option to cancel the order from my end and I had to email customer service.
On June 9th my order was shipped around 4AM. I got a response from CS at 5AM stating that they can no longer cancel my order due to it being shipped out.
Order delivery date estimate was June 15th (Spain -> California). DHL ended up coming to my house on June 12th for delivery.
They are a new company and are using Woocommerce for their website. Just make sure you are ready to purchase since they don’t have an option to cancel the order without contacting CS. They also charge extra for using PayPal. Please note that I had to pay a foreign transaction fee (~$20) since they are in Spain and I’m in California, US. There are credit cards out there that don’t have this fee, I just forgot about it. I also was unable to use one of my CC’s due to the purchase being from out of the country, just fyi this will depend on your bank.
I take it as destiny that my ordered was fulfilled. I’m very happy with my Oxi One
Build Quality
The device is amazingly well built! Aluminum is sturdy and feels expensive. The buttons feel solid. Travel case is great. I have not found any major issues with mine.
I do have to note that the black part of the track buttons labels is not fully filled in. It’s not very noticeable, but it becomes apparent when closely looking at them in dark settings.
Not a big deal to me, but it’s there.
How it fits in the iOS/iPadOS music scene
I don’t have a ton of experience with it just yet. However, in the few hours I have spent with it making music on the iPad it just works. It’s super small and makes it easily portable. My KSP was a pain to carry around, but this guy is just a bit bigger length wise than the iPad. Each track is set to channels 1-4 by default, you just have to set the same in loopy pro or AUM and midi flows. Simple!
All the tracks modes are amazing:
Mono- great for simple or bass Melodies (Agonizer)
Poly - Great for polyphonic Melodies
Chord - easily make chord progressions
Multi - Opens up 8 individual tracks, Great for drum sounds, can mute each track individually and hence each drum sound. (Been using playbeat)
Stochastic - Haven’t really used this yet
Each track can be transposed in real time, and I’m talking looping smaller sections of the track, shifting the octave and root note. There is a MOD button that allows for changing the cc value of a synth or other auv3. Currently mapping them to the cutoff filter of various synths like Agonizer. One of my major pain points on the KSP was the ability to make chord progressions. Using the Oxi One you just have to press two buttons together and walla, chord is set. Additionally, the ability to set scales per track makes it easy to jam with friends. Just find the common root note; a desired scale and making music is a breeze. Each track can be muted individually, this is great for jamming or a live performance. Lastly, the harmonizer mode is incredible. Set any track to chord mode, set the preferred scale and root note. Create a bass line on track 2, and a melody on track three. Set them both to harmonizer mode for track 1 and any time you play a different chord on track 1, both the bass line and melody change to harmonize with the chord. Freaking amazing!
Conclusion
Overall, the Oxi One is now my main controller due to portability and because I can sequence outside of my iPad. There is something magical with being able to touch buttons to make music and not having to switch multiple screens to get a loop/sequence going. Honestly, this setup is perfect for on the go and just for quick music making. I hate clutter and busy screens which I often found myself in while setting up sequences via atom2/LK in AUM. Not to mention that the signals are via midi, which means they can be manipulated further by other apps like scaler or steppolyarp. Super handy, especially when performing live or jamming with friends. I have high hopes for the Squarp Hapax but time will tell what’s best. If you’re outside of Europe, do note that they have a 14 day return policy but you’re responsible for shipping. This can be expensive depending where you live. Secondly, I realize that a lot of the things I mentioned are hard to capture without a video. Please let me know if you guys would like some demos and I’ll try my best to make them.

awesome thanks for sharing! I just ordered one a few days ago. I was absolutely certain I was going to get a hapax (because I'm a huge fan of squarp's other products), but the form factor of oxi one and the harmonizer mode convinced me. Seems like it could not be more perfectly suited for ipad and also for modular synths, which are both of the main things I make music with (in terms of things that need sequencers). Love that it is so portable, battery powered and bluetooth midi. I was actually in the process of building a similar midi harmonizer patch for a scriptable eurorack module (called Droid) when I stumbled on the oxi one. Really looking forward to giving it a try! Definitely interested in seeing any demos you make with it, while I wait for mine to arrive.
Really thorough and cool. Welcome to the fold. Cheers!
Thanks for the review, been curious about the Oxi. Are you using AUM as master clock and Oxi follows along?
The looks remind me of a monome 128 I once had, minus the transport section. Thanks for sharing your thoughts and please report back again when your honeymoon phase is over.
@VeridianCosmos : hi, great first impressions review, thanks! I was on the mailing list for this, teetering on purchase, not pulled the trigger yet (I’m also iPad/modular set up). Pleased to hear about the form factor and Bluetooth, I’ve got limited space for more gear and way too many cables already. Yes, I’d be very interested in any vids you choose to make with this.
interestingly it has a monome mode, where you can run it as a monome grid instead of oxi.
Interesting indeed. I’ll have to check out the docs, thanks.
I read about the shipping in this post and found out that the Oxi is made by a Spanish company, which makes me very proud. Spain is not Sweden, we’re more sangria and tourism… it’s surprising and amazing that they managed to pull this off, must have been extra hard. Super kudos to them. Times like this where “globalization”is actually a great thing.
Great review cheers
Sorry for the late reply. Work gets a little hectic sometimes 😅. Yes those are all great features, the harmonizer and simplicity for keeping everything in key is what convinced me as well. I’ll be honest though, I still bought the Hapax and will eventually sell one. May the best one win. I’ll be posting the demo shortly!
Thank you, I’m a huge fan of your app discount posts. Thank you for the hard work you put in daily!
Hi, actually I have set Oxi as the master clock. AUM follows the Oxi when I press play/stop.
The monome is beautiful. I definitely will.
Definitely an awesome product, they did an amazing job. Go Spain!
Thank you!
Here is a short demo, I play the song and then quickly show how I did it. Let me know if you guys have any questions. Also excuse the fan and poor production quality haha.
I was a suuuuuper early backer of the oxi so I got for a steal. Initial I found it rather a bit confusing as it’s quite different but once you wrap your head around the multiple sequencer types, things click very quickly.
I’ve been super impressed overall, mostly by Manuel’s responsiveness and dedication to making this thing a complete powerhouse.
Thank you for the kind words! Yes, I find it very intuitive to use along with my iPad.
Lucky, I saw those backer prices. They delivered on the promise.
Nice demo! Thanks a lot for sharing!
Still enjoying it a year in? A lot has updated! I'm pondering picking up the new limited edition one as a second to have 8 devices, enough for full projects probably
@wahnfrieden why did you resurrect a necro-thread??? You're not helping my GAS -- lol
I think this one deserves reappraisal in light of other recent announcements. I used to love the Push but I think I’m all in on OXI
Help me choose….I do have the polyend tracker and I was wondering which of the two’s ( polyend play or Oxi One ) will best work with the IPad .
I do like the Bluetooth and battery on Oxi One. I am interested in Song mode/pattern arranger and I heard Oxi One is pretty good to that regard.
Not interested in live sampling ( since tracker does that ) and I suppose with the Oxi one I could use sitala with my own samples or any other sample players…
So, what would you choose?
