Recording with AudioShare - internal microphones
Every now and then I record using AudioShare via the iPad Pro 12.9" M1's internal microphones. Does anyone know which microphones the app uses? Are all 5 microphones being used? The issue is how I place the iPad towards the sound source.
Thank you very much.

I don't know how Audioshare does it, but in AUM you can choose in the settings which of the three microphones you want to use. For the front one even omnidirectional or cardioid and for the rear one omnidirectional or subcardioid.
Many thanks! Good to know.
@Polyphonix
Do you know which mic is ‚front’ and which is ‚rear‘?
Rear is near the camera on the back and front is the three mics. I assume that the main mic is the one right next to the Facetime cam and at least one if not both mics on the edge are responsible for noise cancelling when you are not talking during a Facetime call.
All I know is that the 11" M1 iPadPro defaults to using 'Top Omni' which is the 'noisiest' of the all the microphone configurations and my guess is that it sums all the mics into one audio stream?!
Both Front & Back Stereo configurations are a lot less noisy with both cardioid configs are in the middle.
This is easy to test in AUM where you can select which microphone configuration to use in the settings.
There are some other microphone settings on the device but I know know music app that utilize them yet.
(Voice Isolation, Wide Spectrum etc which can be found in the control center when an app using audio is running).
Don't know if @j_liljedahl has any plans on improving AudioShare's recording capabilities?!
I've personally started to use AUM for field-recording duties and it works incredible well when I remember to 'rewind' the playhead before recording again. (Ie. arm a track and tap rec to instantly start recording, tap pause to instantly stop recording, and then rewind because recording to a new file always starts at the beginning of a bar).
Cheers!
@Polyphonix and @Samu Many thanks for the helpful informations.
I hope that we can select the mics in AudioShare too in the future.
AUM does not seem to remember the Mic settings. On every restart, 'Top Omnidirectional' is selected.
You have to go to the AUM settings to select which microphone is to be used when you select it for a track...

Apple does a lot of DSPMojo to clean up and process the sound as well...
The easiest way to locate the mics is to select one and tap around the device and see where you get the highest level indication.
The Subcadioid on the back of the device should isolate even more (I mean it doesn't catch your breath when your filming which the omni mic will pick up as it picks up everything around the device).
GarageBand does some 'trickery' as well as it automatically picks the microphone with the highest input when you start recording.
The absolutely best way to reduce room reflections is to get closer to the microphone, that's the bare basics of audio-recording.
When I'm outside recording sounds with my iPhone 8 I always use the back microphone to avoid it catching my breathing
Thanks @Samu never knew about that.
