As David Toop describes in his seminal work on Ambient Music, Ocean of Sound, the Gamelan played a huge role in inspiring composers like Debussy as well as the development of ambient music. The Pitchfork article linked to in the pinned comment also talks about its influence on IDM artists like Autechre and Plaid, as well as the likes of Bjork. Here I am using the app Gamelan Gender played into Tardigrain Granular. I then recorded a short performance on Tardigrain and loaded in Audiostretch where I did live timestretching to further manipulate the sound in some deliciously weird directions. The final part of the video is the screen recording of that performance manipulated visually in Glitch Studio. The hypnotic vibe of this short piece, as well as the extreme loud-soft dynamics, is very much in keeping with the traditional ability of gamelan performance to engender trance-like states.
