How to Apply Scratching Effects to a Vocal Sample?

I've been listening to a lot of trip-hop lately and I really like the sound of applying scratch techniques to vocal samples. My question is, are the producers actually scratching records on a turntable, or is there some kind of plug-in that produces scratching effects to the samples? GarageBand iOS has something along these lines in the "FX" but I find it finicky and unpredictable.

Doesn’t Traktor DJ do this? Or does it only do it for songs you load into it?

    Or maybe this one? https://apps.apple.com/us/app/tap-dj-mix-scratch-music/id405088414

  • Samplr can do this with its tape reel play setting.

    Yeah, that might work.

But I think something like a soundboard app with scratch function built in would probably be ideal. If such a thing exists.

Dj player professional has DVS FX, midi mappable multi deck and supports timecode so if you had a portable scratch turntable like the Omni, Reloop, or Numark, can load your vocal samples and scratch with timecode vinyls.

(DJ Player Pro is showcased in the video that is a few years old, I believe the app has been updated and renamed, but retains the same capabilities)

Drambo's Flexi sampler has an excellent scratch mode which can also be used in Drambo hosted as an AUv3 plugin.

It can also be scratched live using an affordable DJ controller like this one:

GrooveRider GR16 has a scratch effect with an XY controller that works pretty well with short vocal samples. There’s also CrossDJ and DJDJ that can allow you to scratch longer tracks, neither is subscription based.

  • Looperator when I'm like really lazy...

  • We DJ - this is iPad version also an iPhone version available

I got the omni and dj player pro. Havent switched on for ages. Might scratch and record. Just for the abstractness of not actually using deck and or to see if people say its truly bad ( with a legit excuse ) Not dj player pro though. Havent upgraded. Probably aum with delays to a blueboard but before. Ipad were close. Kb1 xy pads were good for a line fader. Line fader on/off for mute of drums. Well. Will maybe set up tomoz. Then maybe post some of Qberts cousin.

  • I havent used deck. Even before I bought the akai lpd8 and widi uhost ( for dj player pro ) Not sure why. Its fun. Actually more fun than most apps. Anyway. Blaming tools.

  • First you need one of these…

  • Im actually selling an innofader pnp2 on ebay. Wont post though.

Probably best faders on planet. The pro versions.

Just need a mixer and deck etc and make sure fader compatible.

This thread seems to identify an opportunity for a developer to make elegant AUV3 that can sample or load audio for scratching virtually. The plugin could be MIDI mappable or played onscreen! This doesn’t seem too complicated from my very basic programming mind 😂

Never noticed that the Flexi sampler has a scratch mode.

I made a real-time scratch Turntable preset for that.
    https://patchstorage.com/scratchpad/

Real-time Scratch turntable based on audio source.
Sliding clockwise on the PAD is fast forward, and sliding counterclockwise is fast rewind. The speed of the tape depends on the speed of finger slide. Maximum 8X speed.

  • @ZhouJing Thats awesome. Thank you. I’ll check it out.

Seriously, you’re doing great things with Drambo. It’s so inspiring.

Here’s a real old app. IAA and Audiobus

This was a fun app. Haven’t used it in a long time.
Sadly it doesn’t appear to be working at all now.

    This.
Seems like a perfect app idea for touch. But we’re still here.

You're welcome, I had a lot of fun making these presets myself, and it was the best way for me to learn drambo.

By the way, I made a new version that includes flexi sampler and improved the algorithm of the turntable, it's much smoother and more natural to use now.
    Try it out.

  • Im Gonna have to get a turntable ASAP

Wish I scratched regular maybe. Not hamster. Although I can try because although scratching a while back and a bit before with the omni. Made progress with the omni to maybe stay hamster.

It will sound more like this.

Around 24. You get an addition flow or expansion. Sometimes seems lazy.

I thought id scratch like the other dude.

In a way its probably harder as its all accurate transformers plus maybe other scratch. Although crabs etc and being easier crabbing hamster. This would still need to be acurate overall but also feels good because it feels like a wave. When you get it. Its probably like playing a guitar.

  • Got delays. Wondering what granular delay might sound like. Other desert cities.

  • Hes not even scratching hamster. Probably best to scratch regular ( overall ) for better transformers, as transformers are difficult hamster mode. Only if you think its still ok ( which it will ) to crab. Like at 24. As its better to crab, hamster.

  • Made a scratch app

  • Joking.

    Its not an app.

Just started really with the Omni deck.

I couldnt record anything longer, without it being lame.

You would need loads of practice for chaining patterns with timing.

You lose timing because you arnt sure of pattern chaining.

Could maybe blag with edits ( for a song )
