Audio Interface/Multitrack Mixer recommendations for iPad.

What are people using as a multitrack / audio interface / mixer with their iPads nowadays. Been eyeing up the TASAM 12. Was wondering if it’s class compliant and does multi audio over USB ?

How easily is it to use with iOS DAWS?

Currently have a TC Blender but for some reason can only get it to show up 3 audio inputs that actually work the routing seems to be all screwed up.

If I plug into audio 3 getting audio out through 7 which is Weird. I wish the iPad DAWs showed audio routing better, BM3 seems one of the best under the mixer.

  • Zoom recently announced a new AMS product line for portable musicians. I’m really curious about them.

  • @Ugurcan Thanks for the heads up I’m after one with at least 10 inputs.

You & I are in the same boat… my faithful Alesis ioDock must finally be retired after nearly 10 years & 3 iPads. I have also been eyeing that Model12 for a couple years, but I can’t seem to find firm info about the midi capabilities, ie: syncing external hardware & clock. I know almost nothing about current Interfaces, so not sure what is the best choice for my modest studio.

I picked up a Behringer UMC1820 the other month and it's really cool especially
for the price granted I did pick it up for a song but I would recommend it anytime.

The other one I would recommend but it isn't multi track is the SubZero sz-mix08usb.
I was at GearFest U.K last weekend and
all of the synth and keyboard guys were using them.

Window shopping a couple of days later and I saw one for 30 squids
and as my Behringer Q802usb has developed a fault I picked it up.

It's a cute little sub mixer and surprisingly very clean sounding.
The plastic casing is the only criticism which I may just mod.

  • This thread is relevant to my interests too.

No USB out though?? You'd still need an interface to get any sound into anything. I can't think of any benefit to those things other than as a portable mixer for gigs.

This article suggests that the AMS series are USB C.
They seem to be repackaged U series with the USB functionality upped to USB C.

  • Hi, my static set up is a UMC1820 and has worked flawlessly plugged into a 10 port powered RSHTECH hub with Ipad or PC (90% Ipad).

My TC Blender also has been so awesome although USB powered would be best - your 'routing issues' I find hard to understand apart from a fault or some sort of reset being needed - the SubZero sz-mix08usb looks sooo interesting too.

Huh. Not a single mention of USB in the specs. No pics indicating a port either. It would be crazy if they weren't though, so maybe.

Click on “Compare Models”. USB-C for power and audio i/o, no?

OK, scrolling waaaayyyy down the page I see mention and pics of USB. I knew it had to be there somewhere. It would make no sense not to have USB. But either I'm blind or it's pretty well hidden unless you really look through the whole annoyingly over-engineered web page.

You're not blind, this is just one of those obnoxious/unsearchable web pages that abuse fundamental functionality like scrolling

  • MOTU makes a variety of interfaces at different price points, some with extensive mixing and network capabilities.

  • Is this something maybe? I looking at it myself but I can't find any info if it works with iPad with lightning..

  • SSL 2+ if you don't mind the size. Great sound quality.

Yeah, I was contemplating that until I saw the Behringer UMC1820 deal that I got.
The SSL 2+ is most probably going to be my next usb interface.

  • I thought everyone switched to the TX-6.

    Really?
    Why?

At that price range it's better to get an SSL 2+ and an SSL Six mixer.
The preamps alone are World class.

Oh...Fashion? in that case I'll print out a promo photo and frame it for my studio.

    Life goals and all that.

  • I have a Zedi10, I’m quite happy with it, works well with the iPad. It’s 4 simultaneous in/outs and can work as a standalone mixer. But you’re looking at more inputs, and rightly so.
I’ve been looking at the Model12 forever and I can’t make up my mind. As far as I know it’s the only mixer/interface/recorder that has midi sync. Midi sync is a must if you ever want to use a device like this as a standalone recorder, which is one of the big selling points. I believe it also has sends/returns. The Zoom L12 doesn’t have midi or dedicated sends.
One thing I really don’t like is that apparently you can’t route inputs to tracks, meaning if you plug your guitar in input 2 it records to track 2. If you want to do another take you need to unplug and plug it on another track or do some sort of copy/paste with the previous track.
I don’t know if you can record post-eq on the model12.
I’m tempted by the standalone recording capability of the Model 12, seems like a different “mindset” than having a daw in front of you. With the midi sync you can have a hardware or iPad drum machine , synths or whatever in sync which is a must if you want to do multiple takes.

  • I have a Tascam Model 24, it works pretty good, the only thing with the model 26, 16 and 12 is that they count the main out and input as 2 channels, also you don’t have full mixer recall like on all digital mixers, and they only go up to 24bit/48k, outside all of that I love my Model 24, it’s basically 3 products in one, Mixer, Audio interface and stand alone multi tracker for a thousand bucks.
