Have A Nice Trip (ZOA project #2)
I recently rediscovered the ZOA app. LIke most of these type of apps, it mostly generates musical gibberish, however, every now and then it comes up with something really good. I was trying to create something that sounds like a live band rather than a computer-generated soundscape. This song consists of 3 parts in the form ABCAB. The 3 parts don't work very well together, so the challenge was to try to make them transition smoothly. The horn parts were created with one of the SessionBand jazz apps. I created a bunch of short bursts in various keys, then cut them up and shuffled them around over the top until it sounded as much like a live performance as possible. I think it comes pretty close. What do you think?

Love me some ZOA. I like what you're doing here. There are definitely moments that have a live feeling with the groove shuffling along in the background and different parts taking the lead.
The addition of the sax, trumpet and violin make it sound like a live group:
Michael Brecker
Mark Isham
Stephane Grappelli
I’m glad you keep sharing your construction techniques. In the end it takes a good ear to decide what works together. By the time you get it close to done I’m sure it’s impossible to hear it for the “first time” until you set it aside for a few weeks.
Hi Paulieworld,
Great work!
This requires a lot of technological experimentation and experience, and this creation sounds like a live performance to me.
And the music is beautiful, quite experimental and very melodic.
This is truly a work of technical art, and of course your excellent musical sense.
I am impressed
Well done.
Rene
Thanks for the tip about the REC feature. I don't know how many times I looked at that little button and completely ignored it. The SB apps have so much to offer, and that feature works regardless of the IOS version. Your comment made me realize that I might be able to provide something useful to others. In the future I will try to do more of that.
Finishing something is always difficult because I really love the whole process. Adding things and deleting others. At some point I realize I'm just jerking off, and do a final with MagicDeathEye. Thanks again!
Thanks Mac! I am really liking ZOA. I found that you have to be patient with it. I will try dozens of patterns with multiple synths until I find something that works. I like to sit on my patio with my iPad and headphones, and watch neighbors walking their dogs, mowing lawns, kids playing, etc. I love the process and can spend hours without ever getting bored. Have a great day my friend!
Thank you very much! That means a lot to me. I like the whole process of making 'music' on my iPad. I spent decades playing in various bands, and the iPad experience will never match the feeling of playing for a live audience. However, that is no longer an option for me, so this is the next best thing.
I really enjoy listening to your songs. I can tell that you love it, too. Your song selections show that you have an ear for good music. Your voice is unique and pleasant, and very easy to listen to. Thank you for listening and your nice comments. Have a great day!
It’s good to go off road now and then. The further into the wilderness the better, IMO.
It most definitely is. We will be going 'off road' soon on a Mississippi riverboat. I got the idea for the title from our neighbor who stopped by to say... have a nice trip! Have a great day!
Hi Paulieworld,
Love your great comment on my music.
We both love music, I can see.
Music really is a magical journey, and don't ever stop making your music!
Keep 'em coming.
Rene
Great track… I know what you mean about ZOA (and really all of the generative / semi gen. apps)… it’s a case of waiting for that combination of key / scale / tempo/ synth etc. to pop out and make you think… that sounds pretty good 👍
