JWM - At Hachiko Crossing (Ambient)

Welp, here's another piece of Ambient for most everyone to ignore and not comment on.

I used a different creative process this time which is explained in the SoundCloud description. Cheers and enjoy.

  • hey JWM...it sounds like you're getting discouraged by the reception to your music. my advice: keep posting and don't worry about the number of comments.

first of all ambient/experimental is a niche within a niche within a subgroup of musical styles. Not everyone is going to like or be receptive to this style of music.

And i figure for every one comment you do get there a probably 100 other readers who liked your music, but just didn't respond.

A nice thing about not having to do this for a living is you are not limited to doing something that only pleases a mass audience and what they want to hear from you. you're free to explore and grow wherever you thoughts and interests will take you.

I think you have done well on this forum. In a relatively sort time we've seen a growth in your ability to speak the language of your chosen style and you mastery of the tools to translate raw sound to a finished idea.

You've also brought ambient music to the forefront of the forum with your postings of music, challenges and questions . I'm seeing more drone, ambient and experimental works posted, which i think can be attributed your effort.

As long as you are happy with what you've made anything beyond that is bonus points for the ego.( i mean that in the kindest way. the word ego has gotten a bad rap of late.)

well. that probably more than i've said to anyone at one time in the past week.

  • Great title- makes me think of some sci Fi/cyberpunk location for a deep space warship battle, or maybe a shoot out in a neon and rain drenched future city between cyborg cops and implant-jacked street gangs.

Exactly why I went with a more sinister-sounding bass sound from Zeeon! :) I wanted to get that cyberpunk/futuristic sci-fi feel. I didn't want to go 100% the Vangelis route, so I used Mellotron Tape Strings instead of a Bladerunner-sounding patch. And I challenged myself to take a cheesy "power chord guitar" patch and turn it into something that sounds interesting. Cheers mate.

Do I really smell that bad of desperation mate? 🤣 Okay, all jokes aside, yeah, it is a little discouraging at times, because I like getting feedback if I'm on the right track or not.

first of all ambient/experimental is a niche within a niche within a subgroup of musical styles. Not everyone is going to like or be receptive to this style of music.

That's true. Well, most of the everyday persons in my life don't understand the style of music I'm creating, but usually other musicians do as they appreciate the process and the experimental results. 🙂

And i figure for every one comment you do get there a probably 100 other readers who liked your music, but just didn't respond.

Hmmm, maybe that's the case mate. :)

A nice thing about not having to do this for a living is you are not limited to doing something that only pleases a mass audience and what they want to hear from you. you're free to explore and grow wherever you thoughts and interests will take you.

Exactly! Well, I can still produce EDM like a pro, so in case I need to catch up the bills, I just source out my skills on Fiverr or some other platform. However, the last EDM track I produced for myself was like in January before I hit a really bad creative block. I've attempted a couple other EDM tracks since and instantly lost interest/motivation. Took my slow arse four months to figure out that producing EDM for myself just wasn't pleasing to me anymore/lack of fulfillment of my soul.

I think you have done well on this forum. In a relatively sort time we've seen a growth in your ability to speak the language of your chosen style and you mastery of the tools to translate raw sound to a finished idea.

Thanks mate. :) That means a lot to me. And I love the tools I use. I answered my top ten "desert island" apps in that other thread. My current list is: AUM, Audioshare, Cykle, Module Pro (with all the IAPs), Buttersynth, Alteza, Samplewiz 2, TwistedWave, DAW Cassette, and PaulXStretch. If you would've asked me December of last year, the list would've been completely different as I wasn't into live producing Ambient then.

You've also brought ambient music to the forefront of the forum with your postings of music, challenges and questions . I'm seeing more drone, ambient and experimental works posted, which i think can be attributed your effort.

Holy shit. 😳 Are you serious mate? That is one of the most humbling things I've ever heard anyone tell me. If it's true that I made that kind of an impact here, just damn. I know @Gavinski and others have recently made some really great Ambient and drone music. In fact, I mentioned PaulXStretch to Gav, and suddenly I saw him use it on one of his recent pieces in the YT description.

(I really need to block out 2-3 hours sometime tomorrow to catch up with the Creations section, listen to some great pieces, and comment. I'm such a hypocrite at times, lol.)

As long as you are happy with what you've made anything beyond that is bonus points for the ego.( i mean that in the kindest way. the word ego has gotten a bad rap of late.)

This is true. This is VERY true. I need to realise this that compliments are bonus points. But then again, I am somewhat egotistical I admit. :) And I don't mean that in a self-deprecating way.

well. that probably more than i've said to anyone at one time in the past week.

Well I appreciate you taking the time mate. It means a LOT to me. ☺️ Cheers, and happy Sunday to you.

  • I fully agree with wag.
He is a very wise man, and much appreciation to wag for this outstanding piece of advise.
Applicable to all struggling creators, like me.
    Thank you so much.

Thanks mate. :) And yes, @wag is absolutely wise. I'm floored by what he said.

  • @jwmmakerofmusic This brought back some really happy and nostalgic memories for me.
First though, I love ambient music, so I listened to all of this and it was perfect.
Anyway, back in a much younger and fitter life I was a steel engineer in Birmingham U.K.
I was primarily a Miller, but also did Turning, Boring, Surface Grinding etc.
The company I worked for did a lot of work for British Steel, so every now and then we would get sent out on site to the BS plant in Birmingham to work in their Machine Shop which was huuuuge.
The plant itself was enormous, and there was always this kind of droning ambience in the background whenever we turned the machines off, it was very similar to your piece of music.
I suppose it’s possible that my time in engineering cultured my love of ambient, drone & experimental music in general.
    Thanks for posting😊

That's absolutely fascinating! :) I wish I could visit that plant in person just to do a couple of field recordings to be perfectly honest. Industrial complexes have always fascinated me, or at least the noises they can produce. I remember a failed Dubstep experiment I did about 12 or so odd years ago where I tried to use samples of machinery as a midbass, and failed spectacularly. (Then again, I wasn't the savvy sound mangler I am now. Hell, I wasn't even the savvy sound mangler I am now 6 months ago. 🤣 )

I suppose it’s possible that my time in engineering cultured my love of ambient, drone & experimental music in general.

You're absolutely welcome mate. :) Thank you for your kind words.

    just a few comments...

jwm... yeah, i meant it. your enthusiasm certainly was the motivation that started my posting music again after so many years.

rene... thanks rene. i appreciate the comment, though considering my age "wizened" might be more appropriate.

doug.... that reminds be of my first encounter with the power of the drone.

I was about 10 and my best friend's dad work heavy equipment at a local dig. Keith, my friend, asked if i wanted to spend the night there while is dad was working.

we packed our sleeping bags and sack dinners into the back of his dad's station wagon and parked on site, very close to where they were working ( thinking back i'm surprised at what we could get away with back then. it was a much freer time.)

we had set up bags facing the open back panel of the wagon, and after my friend went to sleep i was up most of the night listening to the sixty cycle drone of the big generators filling the night, punctuated by clank of steel on steel and the roar of diesel engines straining to lift and load rock and dirt to awaiting trucks.

and one more thing....Robert Heinlein, a 50's sci-fi writer (stranger in a strange land, lucky starr space cadet, starship troopers) once listed his secret for success in writing:

    start something
    finish it
    send it out
    start writing something new
    finish it
send it out... you get the pattern.

oh, and if it was returned to you unpublished, send it out again.

That's just really fucking mindblowing. I'm so happy I helped motivate you mate in some sort of capacity. :)

  • Picking up on what @Svetlovska said, the title reminds me of something Iain M Banks would have used in one his brilliant Culture novels. I’m not a great fan of this genre of music but please keep posting @jwmmakerofmusic 👍

Of course mate. :) I sure will.

I listened to this piece on my way to the gym today, and AH! It's so amazing. I love what I crafted here. But I also know it's not to everyone's taste since it is more of a fringe piece of music/Ambient/soundscape/whatever you wish to categorise it as.

Yep, it's strange how in my early 20s I used to dislike Ambient even though it's what a lot of my classmates crafted. Then in my late 20s I started listening more to it. Then now in my late 30s I'm producing it on the daily and am addicted to crafting it more than nicotine, lol.
