Just want to be clear

For using synths and importing drum loops would cubasis be the best app for this?

It is a matter of taste. Some people like I a lot and done don’t. There are many apps that are good for those and each has its fans.

I'm not sure if it'll be the best for you personally since everybody's workflow here is different. That said, for me personally, I love using Cubasis 3 to arrange audio on a timeline when I want to produce my Ambient pieces in that manner. The only downside is, Cubasis 3 doesn't necessarily play nice with my Bluetooth headphones without being routed as an output via AudioBus, lol. If you use cord headphones with one of those dongles that plugs into the lightning/USB-C port (depending on your device), you should be good to go.

  • Cubasis will certainly be good for this. Best? Depends on who you ask. You could use Garage Band, or some other DAW. Some people might point you to Drambo (it apparently does everything). I arrange most of my music in Cubasis and it does everything I need.

  • I think you'd get a lot more answers to this by editing your title to ask that question directly in the post title! But not there are many apps that could do this. Maybe do some searches on the forum like 'best iOS daw' 'AUM vs daw' etc 👍 absolutely huge topic and worth doing your research on, as the host app you use will very much shape the direction your music goes in

  • It can do that, but there Lots and lots of ways to do this, it all depends on what kind of workflow you are using or want to use.

Like @Gavinski said lots of info is buried in this forum, so definitely search to see what comes up.

Golf clap to you, good sir.

  • I would certainly evaluate Loopy Pro if editing MIDI is not high on your list of requirements. Combining, recording apps w/ FX and sequencing the triggering of loops are it’s essence as a form of DAW.

MIDI recording can be addressed with other apps but MIDI is on the roadmap fior sometime this decade. @Michael won’t release an update until it’s damn near perfect.

Good one. I hope Roland has improved the in-app products. It’s the gateway to Roland’s synths with Roland Cloud too.
I always loved that Roland sound of the J series.

A post asking for clarity that has the vaguest title on the forum. Not trying to be cruel but i couldn't resist pointing it out. Clear titles when making posts please, people!

    +1.

I always think "if they can't be bothered writing a descriptive title then I can't be bothered replying".

Also love and highly recommend Zenbeats. What was wrong with the in-app products?

I think I compare IAP’s to BeatHawk and Korg Module… everything else just falls short and I’d expect Roland to be able to compete. Have they with new IAP’s or is the focus on re-purposed hardware “code” (I.e. internal synth software) delivered via the Roland Cloud? StageLight was all about loop packs. The focus could change.

  • Zenbeats fan here, too, and I’ve spent time with most of the other iPad DAWs. You can try it for free and see how you like it.

@CapnWillie I also love the ZC1 synth but I haven’t taken the time to learn Sampleverse. I’ll work on that next.

You guys are correct in general, but in this specific case I would say the style of our valued fellow member jdolecek gloriously shines through that terse title. A style that's not unlike that of a bootcamp sergeant, perhaps a bit of an acquired taste, but I totally learned to appreciate it during his earlier interrogations, by which I mean query posts, and now I find it rather entertaining. 👍

I’m not sure what my workflow is on the iPad so I’m looking for suggestions please

My suggestion: watch tutorials and demonstrations for all the apps mentioned up-thread and BeatMaker 3 and GarageBand and Nanostudio 2 as well and see what appeals to you.

Personal preferences vary so much that I think you have to watch videos and get a sense of what appeals to you.

Ha! Exactly, that's how I got here. I always just skim the topics via the aggregated page rather than by category and assumed this was a bit of prose as title.

  • My advice would be use GarageBand - it’s free. Lots of YouTube videos show how to use it.

Also maybe try downloading the LE edition of Korg Gadget - which is free and comes with a few basic synths. I started with GarageBand, then tried Nanostudio1 (years ago) but that never clicked with me, then tried Gadget - which didn’t click with me the first couple months, but then I came back to it a bit later and everything seemed to open up. Many people love Gadget and how easy it is to come up with tracks in it.

Finding a DAW that works best for one’s particular workflow can be a long (& expensive ) journey sometimes. It might require trying a few of them out beforehand. Before I purchase new apps I usually watch a few videos to get a better understanding of how they work and think about how I might use it.

I’m sure most members here have probably tried out at least 3-4 DAW type apps trying to find what works best for them.

Same. I was like “what is this, another @Paulieworld or @LinearLineman piece”

  • The great thing about iOS apps is that they are all relatively cheap compared to computer programs.
$30 for something like Loopy Pro? Cheaper in the grand scheme of things such as paying for monthly internet service, buying a $500-$15000 iPad, etc.

$20~ each to have Drambo, Cubasis, Gadget, BeatMaker 3, AUM, etc? Buy 4-5 of them for a hundred bucks and have near limitless power. Get them all at once, or one a month. I don’t regret the apps I’ve bought and ended up not using because the price to try is relatively inconsequential in the grand scheme of things.
As mentioned, most of the apps have numerous reviews and demos, the more popular having many.

I can tell you that I use 5-6+ main apps for the backbone of music making in iOS, with a couple dozen more for FX, synth, drum, and sequencing duties. All of them together are still far more affordable than a single DAW on my computer, and together offer tremendous power and flexibility.

All the apps listed in this thread are great, but no guarantees that what I or others recommend will be best for you. You have to do the research, then take a chance and be prepared to ‘waste’ $20 on a bad decision.

Exactly 😂 except doesn't lineman (or is it McD?) usually give his pieces 2 names with a slash between them? 🤔
