Camping in the woods behind your house… Koala, k7D and rymdigare, ambient Lofi “tape loops”.

Good morning all, I made this last night after putting my kids to bed and whilst waiting for my wife to come home from work. It was a balmy night and I had all the doors and windows open. I tried to pare things down, and I managed to do everything in koala sampler, except a bit of k7d delay ( it’s the best tape delay) and a bit of Rymdigare for noisy reverb. It’s nothing complicated, just a building drone and a sampled piano. I used the reverb and distortion at the end to “simulate” tape degradation… and um… that’s it! Any comments appreciated!

  • This is just beautiful! And I love the idea and inspiration to use a saturation plug to simulate tape degradation…. Wonderful! Thanks from the bottom of my heart for sharing.
One idea from me, what about adding the „gate lab“ for dropouts in combination with the degradation

Thank you so so very much! Both for listening and being so nice and for your top tip! I’m going to try this method out I think it could definitely work

  • This is a nice piece. I like the general "weight" of the sound throughout. It just has a nice feeling of solidity to it.

This is beautiful. The timing and the textural aspects sit beautifully with the insistent melodic elements. Really love the way it patiently unfolds. My only suggestion would be to play with some EQ for each element to see what variations you can get to in regards to the way everything sits together. I'd also (subjectively of course) add a little more of a brittle edge to the breakdown before the end. Love the idea from @david_2017 of trying something like Gatelab to simulate dropouts. I think the key is find a balance between pretence and viscerality. Just my 2 cents. If you released it as it I'd love it just as much! Thanks for posting.

  • Also meant to say that I love the track title.

  • This is beautiful. It really, really sounds like tape, badly warned out too. Great sound sculpting with a clear goal. 👍
BTW What did you use for the video/title effect?.

  • Very soothing, yet there’s a dramatic tension to it. Good work in pushing the genre.👍👍

  • Ya this is killer. Super inspiring. Thanks man.

Thank you for your really lovely comments and thoughtful tips. I agree the EQ could help to bring some of the elements out more. It’s kind of like painting with sound and things can get a bit blurry. Thank you for taking the time to respond xx

Thanks very much!! It means a lot because I ditched the tape fx in order to try it myself with some textures and vibrato and noisy stuff. Thank you! The video effect thing is an app called RarevisionVHS it’s pretty nice for crunchy lofi video!!!

    Thanks again xx

  • Soothing soundscape

  • This track made me feel pretty emotional. It's calming, melancholy, just beautiful all around. I think you've found your sound mate. I honestly do.

Absolutely. These days I'm a massive sucker for anything Ambient, whether we're talking tonal, atonal, transcendent, dark, smooth, rough and textured, and so on and so forth. Something that can bring forth emotions, whether these be of calm, of raw unease, of excitement, of subdued melancholy, you get the idea mate. I love any piece of Ambient that can allow me to just exist within the world its sound creates, and your track is one of those.

Considering how mental the world is at the moment, I don't think you/we are alone in that! Maybe it's a way of coping with the hyperconnected, everchanging, anxiety-inducing society in which we live!?

  • Excellent stuff @sevenape . It’s hard (I find it so anyway) to just use a few notes in something this long but this one really worked …

Thanks very very much! It is a bit long!! Usually I leave the notes to phase in and out of each other, but this time I just played them out of time 3 or 4 times! Anyway thank you for listening!!!!

  • Why do the words “camping in the woods behind your house” make me think of Betsy Kettleman?

Just catching up to this now. Lovely gentle degradation.

Thank you for listening and taking the time! :)

  • I just had to think of this again and searched for it and gave it a fresh listen. This is just extremely well crafted out drone and degradation. at the end it gets louder so be prepared folks but this is pure drone gold!
(would a peak limited have been a right choice for the last 3 minutes to tame the loudness?!)

  • in addition to the sounds of this scape, i really like the relaxed pace of it. mondo chill.

It’s that time of year again. It has been very balmy and the dog days of Summer are here. I had to come back to listen again.
You did a good job capturing the essence of [edit] heat with this drone.

  • Listened again; just as rewarding as it was last year.

  • This makes me so happy!!! Thank you guys!!
