SOLVED: Cubasis tempo track (with AUM and Mozaic)
Using Ableton Link and AUMs tempo automation it's now possible to create a tempo track in Cubasis.
How to do this using MIDI notes is outlined in the thread below:
https://forum.audiob.us/discussion/50953/cubasis-3-beatmaker-3-tempo-automation-using-link-and-aum-tempo-presets-edit-or-loopy-pro-au#latest
In this thread I'll outline a more advanced method for a fully automated realtime recorded tempo track in Cubasis.
Things you'll need are:
- Cubasis
- AUM
- Mozaic auv3
AUM setup
Starting from a blank AUM project...
- Enable Ableton Link in the tempo controls
- Click 'Midi Control' on the three bar menu
- Connect 'AUM destination' as a MIDI source
- Open Transport Parameters
- Set 'Tempo' to be 'Pbend' on Channel 1. Click on the range (0-100%) and change it to be 40-200 BPM
- Save the AUM project and leave AUM running in background
Cubasis setup
- Add a track with 'No Instrument'
- On the 'Routing' section set the output to be 'AUM'
- Load Mozaic as a MIDI effect on the track.
Load the script 'Tempo Controller' from PatchStorage:
https://patchstorage.com/tempo-controller/Set the R,W, buttons at the top of the Mozaic window in Cubasis
Set the BPM knob in Mozaic to desired starting value... the BPM should change in Cubasis.
(If not, and the word 'link' isn't displayed under Cubasis tempo then Link isn't working)Press 'Play' on Cubasis transport and use Mozaic to alter BPM as the track plays
- Once done, turn off W on top of Mozaic window
Cubasis will have recorded 'knob 0' values and 'XY Pad' values and you can see them in Automation.
(There's a bug in Cubasis in that you may have to reclick on the automation title to see values).
- Clear the recorded 'XY Pad' values as these are not needed
- Rewind and press Play again in Cubasis (making sure R is still highlighted for Mozaic)
Congratulations, you've created a tempo track.
Notes
- It can be problematic to get Cubasis to show 'link' under the tempo in it's transport. I used trial and error... it's possible there's a guaranteed set of steps that will make it work everytime... I'll update the thread if I find them!
- By default the Mozaic script and AUM are setup to use 40 - 200 BPM. The Mozaic BPM Knob has a range of 128 values which doesn't match the 160 range of BPM. This will lead to BPM sometimes skipping by one or two due to rounding. If a future AUM version allows manual entry of BPM values for tempo then a precise 128 value range can be set. You probably know who to ask for that :-)
Comments
With the new Cubasis update out, I thought I'd bump this post and explain how the tempo track workaround works.
The end result is some Cubasis automation that controls tempo in AUM which then gets synchronised back to Cubasis, altering the tempo in Cubasis during playback.
This works great for playback, however doesn't work for mixdown, so I just did iOS screen record instead. A likely loss of fidelity but was still good enough for what I was doing with this.
