Inter app audio

So I have a bunch of apps but how do I find out which ones are for inter app audio and how do you use inter app audio type apps with gb

With Gb I’m not certain but with AUM, audiobus, cubasis, they all have a separate folder for IAA apps.

If that isn’t sufficient try doing a web search for “how do you use iaa apps with garageband”. There is a lot of good info out there about this, including many videos.

  • IAA is old code and will be going away someday soon. Plus many of them are quite temperamental (crashy). Stick to AUv3 instruments and effects if you can.

  • I think the 'IAA Going away soon' will last for at least another year considering iOS16/iPadOS16 still supports it.
The best indication of the 'IAA Coffin' for real will be when/if Apple removes IAA support from GarageBand.

OpenGL ES has been deprecated on iOS for the past 4-5 years and those apps still work just fine...

There are super stable IAA apps and crashy AUv3. Some of the most stable apps are IAA.

If one already had IAA apps one loves, I see no reason to discourage someone from using apps they have that work well for them.

  • Should I not invest in anymore IAA only apps? Should I abandon the current ones I use? Will the dozens of IAA apps I own just be non-compatible at that point? They’re still usable for as long as Audiobus is supported, yeah?

There is no reason to abandon apps you already have. NO ONE knows when IAA will go away. If you have IAA apps you love, I would not upgrade to a new OS generation until you have confirmed your must-haves work. My current iPad is an iPad 6 and of IAA stops working in a future OS, I'll keep this one as-is for those apps and get a new iPad for for post-IAA work.

At some point (probably not before iOS 17 though ), IAA won't be available. But it could be years. No one knows...likely not even Apple. They consider a lot of factors before ending support for deprecated APIs...some were supported for a decade or more after deprecation (in some cases because some important developers had legacy apps they weren't ready to abandon )

  • @taeo it doesn‘t matter anyway, because with Apple‘s style of „updates“ (no way back) you‘ll have to freeze one IOS device (at some point in time) to continue using your stuff... o:)

But LumBeats Drummers... oh no. Wait. It can export MIDI and audio in precise lengths.

Same for Session Band w.r.t. audio. Use the "Record" option. It's just tricky to get a precise length for the recording but go over and trim in another app.

I wonder how many current IAP's will have access to AudioBus as a gateway to the future?

    Is this information still valid?

In GarageBand for iOS, you can find a list of IAA Apps in the External Sounds section of the Sound Browser. Tap on Inter App Audio and choose from any IAA compatible apps you have installed.

  • I think we need to rename the thread “Stable IAA apps 2022” . I was about to start a thread asking which IAA apps y’all thought were most reliable for Audio and or MIDI instruments and same for Effects. ? And into which Hosts are you having reliability with which app? For me Audio Evolution is the Champ for IAA Audio or MIDI input, but others might disagree…..
