Fader MIDI controller
I’ve been scouting about for a MIDI controller that has both faders and knobs. My ancient Alesis died a month or two back so thought I’d replace the knobs functionality with something dedicated, partly for continuity, but also as I’d like to try and build a clone of Vestax Faderboard
in the drambo…
I thought I’d narrowed it down to Launch control xl vs nanokontrol (studio) vs evolution UC-33 (possibly with a widi adapter to make it easier to iPad it up).
One thing I can’t figure out is whether the two newer options need to be connected to an iPad or computer, or if there’s a way to directly control hardware with them?
There’s also akai midimix but people seem to think it’s a bit flimsy?
I know there’s various threads on each of these but I’ve not seen one discussing them all together so thought I’d see what people thought

Launch control XL seems like the obvious choice to me. I don’t know about Evolution but Korg is quite flimsy too apparently.
I’m using XL mk 1 and couldn’t be happier. Cheap too.
Also XL has leds that can be controlled by Drambo which I think evolution doesn’t?
They do look the best in terms of features as well, but do they work standalone with hardware?
You need to use something like a CME wifi uhost so that you can use it standalone.
Any usb midi host will do. I use Kenton but there’s cheaper options out there. The Kenton works off 5v so can be powered using a power bank if that’s of any importance to you.
Ah cool, thanks both, they look handy
I love my Launch Control XL.
I swear by my Faderfox UC4. Works standalone, IIRC.
Do you need knobs and faders or just faders? For both, another recommendation for LCXL.
For faders only, check out 16n faders variations on the market like this one - https://michigansynthworks.com/products/xvi-16-channel-fader-bank-with-cv-i2c-and-midi also works with Eurorack. I have an older version of this and it works well.
Ah that is a nice thing, though I’m looking for a combo knobs faders setup I think… the LCXL is getting a lot of votes here…
@Krupa
I was merely answering your query in regards to the usb host etc.
Personally speaking?
For the price the LC XL is the best in it’s range.
The closest other ones are Nakedboardrs
https://nakedboards.org/#popup:infoblock
Intech’s modular grid range and a couple of others.
https://intech.studio/
The LC XL has 8 faders, 24 encoders, 8 buttons and 16 pads
with 8 Factory scenes and another 8 User scenes.
My recent dRambo project turns it into a 16 step CV sequencer
with Pitch and Filter control and Cubasis 3 has an inbuilt template for it.
You could get a mk i and update the firmware so that it’s a mk ii.
Alongside using Novation’s Components you can use
Midi Synth Control so that you don’t have to use a desktop.
So yeah, I would recommend it.
i'm wishing for a Faderfox MX12: http://www.faderfox.de/mx12.html
Cheers @Gravitas those two look nice but the LCXL seems like great value in comparison, I think I’m tossing up between an old UC-33 and that still… and @bangzero the ffox looks amazing, maybe when I win that lottery 😅
Selling a korg nanokontrol Studio and think a dj program would actually be better with faders. Also havent even checked if program will recognise controller im keeping. Should do if program is on ipad where controllers are. 5 pin midi. Audio 4c.
Where as korg is bt. Akai which also works is bt. Have only ever tried connecting bt.
hmm.
Its going to have to work.
SL Mixface might be worth a look

Yeah it is a nice option, thanks, though I think I want something with at least two knobs per fader channel...
