LFOH! and crackling noises (and fixing ch and cc numbers when changing presets) question

Hi everybody

I never had any issues with LFHO!, but it suddenly happened to me that this loud crackling noises appeared when I was trying to control a Bleass filter:

As you can see at the end of the video, this only happens when LFHO is the one controlling the frequency of the filter. When I manually change the frequency of the filter it works without any problems or noises. On the other hand LFOH is barely changing the frequency of the filter, but I still hear the noises (compared to when I do it manually, I can move it to extremes and there are no noises)

Any idea of what may be the problem?

And one more question, now that I am on the topic of LFOH!. Is there any way to keep the midi channel and cc values fixed when changing presets? I hate it that those number return to default values as soon as a preset is changed

Tx!

I can’t say for sure why but I occasionally get this loud, reverb, feedback, crackly sound in AUM. It’s not LFOH at least for me, could be anything. Usually after I’ve been running a session for awhile and my DSP is getting high. I’ve been meaning to start a thread about it cause I don’t know if anyone else experiences it or what. I usually save, close, exit, reopen and it’s gone. Maybe clear some memory.

It happens maybe 3-4 times a month. It sucks. I have to hurry up and pause cause it seems to get louder.

Just watched video and mine is different. Mine is one sustained sound.

Have you tried closing everything, turning off and turning back on device?

Watch the meters! When the crackling happens, the level is very high and showing red. I think your settings are resulting in the lfo changing the volume due to the filter settings. Adjust yiur settings so that doesn't happen....probably by reducingnthe lfo amplitude or reducing the synth's level

FWIW I think I’ve experienced this, and usually end up killing all apps and restarting the device. I haven’t systematically tried to narrow down what’s causing it, and it doesn’t happen than often.

  • It could be that lfoh is sending the cc at a rate that is to high. Typically a control rate of 20 cc messages per second would be manageable. Some controllers send cc more often, sometimes a couple of hundred times per second. I have written a mozaic script that reduces the rate of the sent cc. It will also show you the rate of the cc being sent. You can find the script on patchstorage. It is called DataReducer.
There are also two other scripts that might help you with your other problems. ChannelSwitcher and ControlConverter.
These scripts are part of the ControlChain. Best way to install these scripts is to download the ControlChain.zip and then long press on the zip file and choose open in Mozaic. This will create a folder in Mozaic with all the scripts.

Me neither. It almost sounds like maybe something with the speakers, I think every time it happened I was only using native iPad speakers. I’m on iOS 15.5 iPad 6 (2018) it isn’t frequent but it concerns me.

It’s really hard to capture on screen record too because it happens really quickly and gets really loud with reverb and feedback, so you instantly pause and close. Currently I’ve only had it happen in AUM but with different apps. Although it might not involve Kymatica I wonder if they’ve heard of this… Hopefully I can remember to stop screen record it next time it happens so we can try to get to the bottom of it. I would love to know what causes it.

    I think this deserves a thread…

    Thanks for your replies guys!
@espiegel123 On this example the meters are high, I agree, but even if I lower the volume I still that get that sound. And when I move the filter frequency manually the clipping sounds never happens, even if the volume is very high.

@alfred I tried the data reducer; it helps reduce the crackling but it does not get rid of it

What I have "discovered" so far though some quick testing is that the problem may be related to Bleass filter rather than LFOH?

    • If I automate the Bleass fliter with a Mozaic script (Chaos LFO, which I found at patchstorage) the crackling is still there.

    • If I use the blamsoft F-16 filter instead of the Bleass one and I have the frequency and resonance automated with LFOH and Chaos LFO (Mozaic) I do not hear any crackling noises.

I recorded this test, but the video ended up being way longer than I expected (I was getting the CC and Midi Channel settings wrong). But here it is, just in case it helps

  • You know if you are just using the midi CC from LFOH it might work better if you put it on a separate audio channel, just an empty one with LFOH in effect slot. Since it’s both an audio fx and a midi fx, it might help.

What’s odd is I remember I bought LFOH the day it came out, one of the first things I did was run it to the frequency of Bleass filter and it did that same thing you are talking about. I forgot all about it until now. I can not remember what happened. There is another thread, the original LFOH thread, and if my memory serves I might have mentioned it there, let me check.

I did not mention it, but there’s some good info on the app available. Turns out there’s a bunch of threads on this app even though it’s only been out like 6-7 weeks. Here’s one below with some info, but use the forum search and type in LFOH to get a list of threads with that in the title. You might be able to find some info in one of these…

    https://forum.audiob.us/discussion/50499/lfoh-by-k-devices/p1

  • I see lfoh was sending the cc 433 times per second. That is more like audo rate then control rate.
