I wouldn’t start here if you want to go there: Minimic, The Bad Thing

“ “Wha.. what is that abomination, Cardew?” The other man grinned wolfishly, certain now that Micklemass had no hope of escape. “Oh that? “ he said, languidly. “That’s The Bad Thing.”

This started out as my first try at Minimic, a one second blip of me on kalimba. I think it’s fair to say it has been… heavily modified. (Loadsa Quanta, Lo Fi Tape, Decent Sampler, Factory, Cykle, Shiftbud and a shedload of fx, driven by Scaler’s interpretation of the loop.)

  • Sounds like you’ve clicked with it

  • Just absolutely sublime, mysterious, dark, both giving a sense of unease and yet calm at the same time. :) I really love what you've made here mate. More please.

  • This evoked hostile beauty. I admire your unorthodox creativity

You have also convinced me to pick up Minimic.

  • Nice musical soundscape.
I love the suspenseful feel of your music.

  • @Toastedghost, you wanted to take a listen at Minimic... here's an awesome example

@Svetlovska once again you take us on an amazingly absurd adventure into the unknown :sunglasses:

Hey, thanks all for the listens, and the very kind comments. :)

My brief brush with Minimic showed me a) it’s fun, definitely worth the money, and b) I don’t really have the patience to make full pieces in Trackers! I remember well the amazing things people used to do on Amigas with those back in the day, and I am in awe of such skills. I am not those people…

Being me, and following my self imposed rule that if I buy an app I have to use it in a piece immediately, I mashed a few keys on my little Kalimba hit, exported the wav, and then built the piece in AUM off a Scaler interpretation of the loop, which remained in the piece as the textural ‘twittering’ and squeaks you may be able to hear. In truth, Scaler did most of the heavy lifting here, but Minimic has already earned its’ keep for me in providing the skeleton off which everything else hung.

*side note: inspiration also provided by that grotesque image. I took the photo of this huge, person-high, arachnoid driftwood tree root on a walk recently along the banks of local estuary. A Bad Thing indeed…

Brilliant, though very hard to tell which bits are Minimic. love to see the real workflow on this one.

Hi, @Toastedghost, and thanks. :) The entry above yours from me explains it, I think? I only used Minimic to create one short loop, which I exported as a wav into an AUM file player, and everything subsequently flowed from that. Don’t think I have the patience for Trackers, but it is fast and easy to use to capture the samples. TBH, having satisfied my curiosity with it/iron rule that anything purchased must be used immediately in a track, for instant real world sampling in future, I’m more liable to reach first for Koala or Esion, though I may try again with some more full-fat tracking when I need to jump my creative tramlines.
