Rare IPad Speaker Flare Up With Feedback and Reverb

Wondering if anyone experienced this, trying to narrow down the possible causes.

This came about in another thread.

Excerpt from discussion with @bygjohn and myself

Me neither. It almost sounds like maybe something with the speakers, I think every time it happened I was only using native iPad speakers. I’m on iOS 15.5 iPad 6 (2018) it isn’t frequent but it concerns me.

It’s really hard to capture on screen record too because it happens really quickly and gets really loud with reverb and feedback, so you instantly pause and close. Currently I’ve only had it happen in AUM but with different apps. Although it might not involve Kymatica I wonder if they’ve heard of this… Hopefully I can remember to stop, and quickly screen record it next time it happens so we can try to get to the bottom of it. I would love to know what causes it.

I think this deserves a thread…

And here is that thread…

From this thread. There is another post or 2 in here but I think I basically covered everything mentioned in this new thread…

For me it sounds like feedback but with some echoing reverb or something. Also Crackling involved.
It’s pretty infrequent maybe 4-5 times a month, I use this daily, but I’d like to get to the bottom of it if possible. It comes on fast, seemingly out out no where and gets real loud real fast. I instantly pause save, close session, close app, and it’s usually fixed.

    iPad 6 iOS 15.5
Only in AUM so far but I use AUM 95% of the time
To me only happened using iPad built in speakers
Usually a session is running for awhile, playing continuously while I tinker
DSP is on the high side with several midi and audio connections running
spikes from opening and closing apps particularly with more elaborate gui.

Then at some point, for some reason the sound flares up quite loud through the iPad speakers.

If you’ve experienced this please share. Any help is much appreciated. Cheers!

  • Oops, responded to other thread as I’d not spotted this one.

I’m also on a 2018 iPad 6, iOS 15.5, which is interesting in itself.

In my case I’d say it sounds less feedback, more like distorted noise, but loud, and I don’t remember it happening on anything but the speakers. On the other hand, my memory is not hugely reliable!

I’m pretty sure I’ve also had it happen when just using MiRack standalone. Sometimes deleting a module and reloading it will work, but mostly not.

Same solution, in either case: restart the iPad.

I think it has something to do with having run the iPad and lots of apps for a while, and something builds up that needs clearing. Similar to what happens when a project suddenly starts using a lot more DSP in AUM than it previously did with crackles, and some nodes won’t load when you load a saved project. Everything is fine after restarting the device.

One thought springs to mind: some sort of memory leak that slowly eats up the available RAM? Though I freely admit I don’t really know what I’m talking about on that one.

No worries, glad you saw this one.

Right on. The sound isn’t definite feedback, I just used that word to try to describe it in some way. Since it doesn’t happen often and I quickly close stuff I’m just going based off memory. It definitely crackles, and to me it almost sounds like I hear a distant echo of what is playing in AUM, but it gets loud really quick.

That is interesting that you are on the exact same device, and it happens through the iPad speakers.

Yea I think it might be something with memory as well, since it typically happens after I’ve been running a session for awhile. I don’t know a ton about it either, but some signs definitely point in that direction. That’s interesting you had it happen in MiRack standalone too. I don’t have MiRack though.

The next time I hear it, I’m going to try to quickly screen record and see what happens. If you have any developments please share.

    Thanks For the feedback. Cheers!

If there’s someone else out there who has noticed this odd sound please let us know…
