What Lovecraft looks like to an AI: ‘A great, blooming, buzzing confusion’
“One great blooming, buzzing confusion.” - the famed psychologist William (brother of Henry) James, imagining the world as experienced by the “…eyes, ears, nose, skin and entrails” of a new born baby.
Having made a piece inspired by his evocative phrase, (Steel Guitar Pro, Scaler, Atom, and multiple dupes of a phrase I made in a free Tenori-on style app - the name escapes me - screen-capped and recorded as File Player loops), I also put the words into the free text-to-image AI artist programme https://create.starryai.com, style filter ‘Lovecraftian’. This image is what ‘blooming buzzing confusion’ looks like to a Lovecraftian AI. Does it know something we don’t?
As ever, enjoy, comment, ignore, drag in random political observations and pick a fight, etcetera
(PS for @Kashi : loadsa MIDILFOs action in this track, on automated fader riding, panning and filter resonance tweaking.)

Nice!
I am speechless, hypnotized and a bit confused!
I am digging this recording.
I like "Lovecraftian".

No fight picking here @Svetlovska , just peace and love to everybody!
Great work, liked the Tenori-on feel, shame they never continued and improved it… guess ZOA is in the same area?
The AI text to image stuff available now is fantastic, Haven’t use starryai but have tried Nightcafe, craiyon and Wombo. All different but great for producing track and album art.
No fight, just devotion
You're our lovecraftian high-priestess
Amazing track and storytelling as usual
Btw, besides Tenori-On on ios
remember Aurora Sound Studio and Synergy Studio (from 4pockets on what I guess was before Paul's days)
@ReneAsologuitar : If you like Lovecraftian , you may love Lovecraft… all his work is available online here: https://www.hplovecraft.com/writings/fiction/, and because it is out of copyright, available for cheap in multiple editions everywhere.
I’m biased, obviously, but I think the work is without parallel at the level of conception/world building/bleakly nihilistic philosophy which chimes with my own beliefs about the insignificance of our little species in this great and indifferent universe (though admittedly it is sometimes very clunky at the level of execution - e.g. cardboard characters, over elaborate articulations, and a tendency for his heroes to either a) continue conveniently if improbably to make notes even whilst being devoured by some eldritch Thing, or b) faint at the most aggravating moment…)
However: He is obviously, and famously ‘problematic’, which is to say you absolutely can’t overlook the fact that he held utterly reprehensible racist views, for sure in his youth, though arguably less so as he matured, which nevertheless infected some of the stories too. (e.g. the otherwise brilliant ‘The Horror At Redhook’ ).
For some people that is enough to write him off, regardless of whether the work he produced was any good or not on its’ own merits, and I wouldn’t seek to argue anyone out of that. I thought though that the recent novel Lovecraft Country (not so much the TV show they made of it) addressed the issue in a more nuanced way than simply ‘cancelling’ him, directly situating The Problem With HP in the centre of a story which nevertheless payed homage to the brilliance of his weird fantasy, thus acknowledging the quality of the creativity in his work without letting the attitudes he held in person off the hook.
Against it though is firstly the fact that he clearly made some headway toward humanity (e.g. having initially been anti semitic along with most of his class and station at the time, he later married a Jewish woman).
Can you separate the art from the artist? Or indeed, should you? I vote yes, because for me once a work is out in the world, it is its’ own thing, and should stand and fall on its’ own merits there. Informed by, but not over determined by, the biography of the creator, perhaps… There are plenty of examples of great artists who were less than wonderful human beings…
I think of it as the Leni Riefenstahl problem: she remained an unrepentant literal Nazi until her dying day, and her most famous film, Triumph Of The Will, is a hymn to the glorification of the Nazi party. And yet, it is also a coruscatingly brilliant piece of avant garde cinema, ( and arguably all the more dangerous for it…)
Damn, @GeoTony : politics got in here again! Sorry, my bad!! Yes, AI text to image - well spooky stuff. The only problem with the ‘Lovecraft’ filter is they clearly trained it on images featuring lots of Runes and Elder Signs and whatnot, because so far every pic I’ve created with starry.ai ends up with undepcipherable text in it (starry wisdom, perhaps? ) I’ll have to give the three you namechecked a go too…
@lasselu : thank you! Glad you liked it.
@senhorlampada : thank you. “Lovecraftian high priestess” huh? I’m blushing now… ☺️ Yes, I just checked the price of s/h Tenori-Ons. Not cheap… and those particular apps have gone from the store, sadly. I wonder if anyone has done a ‘Tenori On’ mode for Launchpads?
So: thanks all for the listens and the comments. Makes it all worthwhile
