I have installed both Apps, midimitrr on the phone and Midiberry on the win10 machine. Is there any step by step tutorial you might be able to link me to please for my next steps?

Do you have on your iphone an app that generates midi and has midi output ?

Why not save yourself the hassle and buy an akai lpd8 wireless. The outcome with your current akai is that it will always need to be tethered to something for power and midi connection.

But does it work with Windows over BT ?

I had high hopes before using Midiberry but BT MIDI under Win 10 or 11 still seems to be a matter of luck. I haven't found stable config after years, even the rather expensive CME WIDI Bud only seems to work with a few devices when using the Windows pairing software.

Yes, similar experience here, hit and miss with Windows, MidiBerry felt too much like it’s permanently stuck in Beta testing, okay for experimenting with, but certainly not reliable.

I got stable connection ,but the jitter is very high , certainly not for playing notes , might be ok for simple CC triggering

It should be, but anyone considering this should check compatibility of your Bluetooth ‘dongle’ adapter and it’s driver, it’s another possible complication on Windows.

Found some info on how to report the problem to MS if anyone thinks it's critical for their workflow

It still blows my mind that windows has matured rather well over the past 10 years, but their audio/midi is still stuck in the early 2000s. And why is ASIO still a thing (and still sigh worthy)?

MS did improve the audio (remember MME and directx sound ?) with WASAPI , but is still not suitable for low latency (introduced on Vista era ) ,so ASIO remains essential (and unfortunately the implementation and quality of the driver varies )

It’s just surprising ASIO isn’t like rock solid by now. Everything else in windows seems to be.

  • So guys, sorry to bump but any step by step anywhere for me to try out the iPhone and midiberry connection please?

You could use this, but use MidiMttr or a suitable Bluetooth app, Thumbjam….to connect instead of the WIDI device.

On your PC pair your iphone via bluetooth

Make sure on system-settings that both midimitrr and Midiberry can work in background

Open midimitrr , go to "Advertise" tab and select "advertise midi service "

On your PC pair your iphone via bluetooth (you will see a new name) and launch Midiberry app
There should be a new port and select it as input
On midimitrr the advertise will automatically stop and on Status below it should inform you that that the connection is done
Now as midi Destination tab it should include your PC name

You can try DRC synth which is free to try , and on destinations you shoud be able to choose your PC
play some notes and on Midiberry on input monitor you must see midi messages

If it works , sending those messages to reaper is easy , first check if the connection is stable and works

  • Thank you very much for the tutorial but will need to wait as the bluetooth driver is not working on the pc which means I will need to order a bluetooth dongle for this.

you'll need a dongle that supports at least BL4 LE at least . (I think every modern dongle supports that nowdays)
    You can check
    https://www.dell.com/support/kbdoc/en-uk/000139203/dell-wireless-1705-bluetooth-function-inoperative-after-windows-10-upgrade?lwp=rt

so you may have to download the driver manually from here
    https://dl.dell.com/FOLDER02607671M/1/Network_Driver_1811W_WN_10.0.0.293_A00.EXE
(or search on Dell site "bluetooth 1705" rather downloading from random posted link !)

but looking at the chipset , it seems to be an Atheros based BL v3 not v4 LE ( as Dell 1707) , so you might need buying a new dongle

Is latency an issue for enabling/disabling FX on Reaper ? If not it might worth trying midi via wifi . It's unstable but might do the work you need

  • Great, will get it, thanks!

Yes, definitely latency will be critical as the fx's need to be triggered precise points of a phrase or piece of music especially when using looping fx.

I got the dongle but sorry I am confused on the instructions highlighted above so don't know what to do next, help please? Also the name "Tango" is one of my networks and is only for our printer so I am guessing the pairing shown is for the printer and not my phone?

On midimittr , on Advertise tab you should see a name , you can type something like BTMidi
On your PC when scanning for BT devices you should be able to see that name and pair it . (only then MidiBerry will see the bt midi port)

If there isn't any device shown try searching on YT how to generally pair your iphone with your PC , if you can't do it for whatever reason ,you won't be able to to proceed

Ok, making progress, I played around and figured out how to pair the iphone and that's done. Now, I have DRC App on my phone but I am not understanding what you mean by "on Destinations", please clarify? When I press any notes on DRC on my phone nothing is showing in Midiberry.

Forget about DRC for now ,
you missed the part "....There should be a new port (on Midiberry app) and select it as input
On midimitrr the advertise will automatically stop and on Status below it should inform you that that the connection is done"

So first select the input :)
It can be tricky since sometimes when selecting the input, Midiberry hangs , or automatically resets the ports
After few tries , closing reopening Midiberry it should remain selected (the iPhone (Bluetooth Midi In port)

Thanks for getting me this far! Pressing the notes on DRC is working now in Midiberry. Seems in Midimttr, the Advertise Midi Service needs to be OFF for this work. Ok then so what's next for me to trigger my fx plugins in Reaper from DRC please?

If there should be a tutorial specifically for DRC for Reaper please link me to it. I am seeing this video here in my searches but I am not understanding how to use DRC on my phone to trigger the fx plugins.

No , it should stay on ,else Midiberry will not find the BT device . The service is automatically closed once the connection is made . If you selected the midi port form MidiBeryy app and Midimttr didn't close the advertising service it's a bug
But since you got it to work , everything is fine

you disable midi monitor for Midiberry (no needed) , then select as output Loopbe port

Open Reaper select Loopbe as input port (from Repaer midi settings), create a track , select Loopbe input , press arm and it should work

Sorry I am not understanding some part or the other in this process.

Whenever I open Midmittr it's always OFF so I turn it on.

I then go straight to Reaper and do everything you've written above.

Now I go back to DRC and press some notes, if these are the correct processes then when I press those notes what am I looking for in Reaper please? Doesn't DRC need to be setup first to control certain functions in Reaper?

For clarity. This is a generic Reaper I am testing this on and not using my actual very complicated project which has the Akai controller setup.

Correct , it will automatically close

you forgot to choose the BT port input on MidiBerry app ,seeing the screenshot it's not selected

You must choose on DRC as midi output the new port created called "Desktop something" (somewhere in DRC settings and deselect any input)

On Reaper launch a virtual synth , check the latency via BT if it's ok . That's the test

For clarity. This is a generic Reaper I am testing this on and not using my actual very complicated project which has the Akai controller setup.

you can also try launching your project and use midi learn on Reaper the note-on/off messages from DRC to check the latency
If the trigger timing is ok and the connection is stable over time , then it worth investing on a lighting to usb cck adapter to connect your MPD to your iphone (there are 2 types , a simple one and another adapter that allows charging your iphone while your MPD is connected)

Every time I open DRC now, it's showing the Unlock window and I am not seeing any option to close that window so I can't check the Settings?
