Audio interface prevents RemixLive app from working with Audiobus 3
Hey
I’m looking to run a set up that enables me to run RemixLive (with a Launchpad) and ThumbJam at the same time on my iPad (5th gen) with them both routed to GarageBand or Cubasis 3 to enable recording of a live jam.
What I have found is that when my evo4 audio interface isn’t plugged in the above set up works fine. RemixLive and ThumbJam can both be routed through Audiobus to either GarageBand and Cubasis 3 and I can record. The second I plug in the audio the audio interface the audio drops out.
When the apps are in stand alone mode and the audio interface is plugged in they play fine through the audio interface to the speakers. I am unable to record this way though.
When I load Audiobus 3, the second I place RemixLive into the input of the Audiobus channel the sound drops out.
Ideally I do want to use the audio interface because I need the 2 channels for guitar and vocals over the top of the jam session.
Does anyone have any thoughts??
TIA

Thumbjam supports the Audiobus protocol. This ought to mean that if you load Audiobus first, then Thumbjam, then add Thumbjam to an Audiobus audio lane (Thumbjam must be granted Local Network access), it should be bound to Audiobus and ignore the audio interface.
I cannot tell if RemixLive supports Audiobus, so this may not be possible for it.
Your life would be much simpler if you could switch to AUv3 apps, because you would then have full control over audio and MIDI routing.
Second thought: You could try loading Audiobus first, and routing a dummy audio lane to the audio interface. (This may require loading an AUv3 instrument that you don't intend to play.) That might prevent the IAA apps from connecting to it.
Sometimes it’s the order in which you do things, or when you make the connection. It’s usually best to connect interface first before you start anything. iPad will recognize it, then open everything up.
Also like @uncledave said. IAA can sometimes be a little finicky. For example, Some apps you need to open in standalone before you load the IAA into a host.
Generally, even if an IAA host can successfully launch a standalone app, loading the IAA app manually, eliminates the zombie app issue. If a host launches an IAA app, when the host quits, the standalone may still be launched but doesn’t show up in recent apps and do can’t be forced to quit.
@GarethPring - I think it would be helpful if you could post a screenshot or two of your Audiobus setup with the EVO, RemixLive and GarageBand or Cubasis.
This is probably just a routing / setup issue.
Thanks to each of you to responding to my question.
@uncledave . Yes ThumbJam works exactly as you said. Whether the audio interface is plugged in or not ThumbJam plays though a GarageBand track. I should have said that was the case before. Apologies.
Can you just explain the dummy audio lane. The output would still go to GarageBand?
@Poppadocrock . Yes. I’m conscious of doing things in the right order. If I start RemixLive in standalone mode and turn on Audiobus it doesn’t work regardless of audio interface.
I tried starting it all up with both the audio interface plugged in and then plugging it in after it made no difference.
@wim pictures attached.

So picture 1 shows an attempt to record RemixLive with the audio interface plugged in. Obviously unsuccessful. The slight waveform and the end is when I had a noodle with ThumbJam.
Picture 2 is my audio interface options in settings
Picture 3 is how I’ve been routing the apps. This works fine without the audio interface. Only ThumbJam works when the a/i is plugged in.
Picture 4 successful recording of RemixLive without the audio interface.
Picture 5 my input options.
On a side note, is it possible in GarageBand to route the apps to seperate tracks like it is in Cubasis? It does it automatically in Cubasis. Might be too much for GarageBand?
Thanks again for your time on this.
For the dummy audio lane, I was thinking of adding a synth to a lane, and routing the output to the interface. That might make it impossible for RemixLive to default to the interface for its output, so it would play better with Audiobus and GB.
Doesn't GB see Audiobus as a multi-output audio source? Can't you connect each of those sources to a different track?
@GarethPring :
why are you using Audiobus rather than connecting directly to GarageBand or Cubasis? You can can connect your IAA apps directly without going through Audiobus.
If you are using Audiobus/GarageBand
what happens if you
-unplug your interface
-reboot
-plug in your interface
-launch GarageBand and confirm that it’s output reaches the interface
- launch Audiobus
- launch ThumbJam (manually) and then load ThumbJam as a source in Audiobus and set GarageBand as the destination
- Launch remixlive then add it as a source in Audiobus
- Add GarageBand as the destination?
In GarageBand make sure that monitoring is turned on.
Right on, just throwing some troubleshooting ideas out there.
Is Monitoring turned on? In the first pic, it’s either that circle with the Wi-Fi lines below it…or maybe the speaker with the line through it. Haven’t used GB in a little while. But in order to hear the sounds being recorded you have to have monitoring turned on. Hopefully this helps.
@espiegel123 and @Poppadocrock
Thank you again guys for your suggestions.
Re Inter app audio. They same thing happens within inter app audio when the Audi interface is plugged in, the audio doesnt play through the daw of choice (GarageBand or Cubasis) and only with the RemixLive App. Furthermore it appears you can’t have two IAA’s running at the same time to seperate tracks (or even the same track) in GarageBand which is what I was initially trying to achieve.
It was these initial frustrations that got me looking for a work around, hence Audiobus.
Even with Audiobus I can’t run seperate apps to seperate channels in GarageBand. They record into the same track (a limitation of GarageBand).
Re: monitoring. Sorry, that may have put you off. You can record without monitoring on because RemixLive app can still be heard under GarageBand. By having the monitoring on it plays out the recording signal and the RemixLive app together, so not necessary (hope that makes sense)
I tried all the above suggestions, (powering up procedure) on both GarageBand and Cubasis with the same outcomes. At least with Cubasis, Audiobus sends the different apps to different tracks. My issue there is the amount of crackling I get. I suspect my 5th gen iPad might not be up to the job, but that’s for another forum.
My conclusion is that RemixLive is the problem. The settings within it don’t appear to provide enough options or means of changing its routing.
Thanks for your efforts.
@GarethPring : A 5th gen iPad will definitely be limited in terms of how many audio apps can well run at the same time. The gen 6 was a huge leap forwards in performance. Larger buffers will help some.
@GarethPring
remix live is most likely the issue. I was trying to incorporate it for a while in AUM projects. While I didn’t experience that exact issue, I had a multitude of issues I worked through, and in the end it wasn’t stable enough for me. It constantly came unloaded/have to be restarted, didn’t like have shared controllers in both itself and AUM, I had to trick AUM to play the controller to play things in RML (no midi routing between when I last tried).
@louish was here for a while asking for some input on the app. He mentioned they might implement AUv3 in some way (hosting? Better integration in other hosts? Dunno)
I’ll revisit it again possibly if midi implementation improves and it’s more stable in other hosts. I hope they do as I think there’s room in the space they are trying to occupy.
@AlmostAnonymous
Appreciate your input. After getting everyone’s thoughts I’ve now got closure on the issue! Thank goodness. It was torture not knowing!
I can now plan around it. The reason I went with RemixLive was because of its capability and interaction with Launchpad and that’s what’s most important. There are work arounds.
@espiegel123
I hear you, upgrade long overdue.
The Launchpad app and BlocsWave work well with Launchpad hardware
