Beat making apps

My true love has always been making beats, so I don’t miss out on any underground beat making apps. What do you use for making your beats???

Comments

  • Quick question are you thinking standalone, or AUv3 to use in a host? Or both?

Also do have some samples? If not there are millions of free ones.

Koala is both AU and Standalone, its very intuitive and an amazing app, but you need to record/add your own sounds, samples, one shots, loops, etc.

It’s a little old now, hasn’t had an update in awhile, but earlier on in my iPad journey I used Imaschine 2 a lot. It’s a closed system (no real connectivity) but it’s easy to use, great for sketching or making beats and getting them done quickly. Sounds and instruments are built in, as well as additional IAP sound packs to buy for $.99. I still use it sometimes, but it’s not in my main workflow.

There are so many … and of course it depends on what you mean by making beats:

    BeatMaker 3
    GR-16
    ElasticDrums
    Groovebox
    Drambo
    Launchpad
    BlocsWave
    DrumComputer
    Hammerhead
    PureAcid
    ReSlice
    sEGments
    Flip Sampler
    Koala
    Loopy Pro
    BeatHawk
    Egoist
    Gadget
    Patterning 1 & 2
    Sector
    Nanostudio 2

  • Yea, all great options.

  • @jdolecek49
as above- and depending on your style etc.

the list ought to include the Akai/Retronyms iMPC Pro 2. it’s maligned here on the forum, but I can recommend it as the app closest to the hardware MPC, and is deep and fun
The twin developers also hsve a far simpler emulation of the MPC called iMPC which is also a ton of fun

I know this is mentioned alot here, but for me the quickest and best beat making app is Drambo. If the depth is a turn off, you can ignore all features and just stick something like Sitala or Koala and use the sequencer, it’s super simple/easy to use and so quick for putting beats together. I can make a semi decent beat with it in like 60 seconds, then have many options to expand upon it etc.

The only thing I don’t like in Drambo is the samplers, never got on with them, but Sitala instead is awesome.

  • Hammerhead. It may not exactly be “underground” today, but before it was reimagined as an iOS app, it had almost cult status as one of the earliest fun beat machines. Bram Bos resurrected it, masterfully blending the original vibe with updated features. It’s a blast and super useful as well.

A couple references to the original here:

I think I’ll shout out to iELECTRIBE as well. Not underground, but not talked about much anymore as it’ll probably never be AUv3. But holy hell is it fun, and it does a great job of bringing the vibe of the original hardware.
