Oh my god it's so damn beautiful. 🤩 It felt like I'm floating in Heaven. But...it's way too short sadly, lol. I could listen for an entire hour or two and not be tired of it. Just keep me floating above the clouds.
"beatless, unexciting and as featureless as possible"
You're speaking my language here, lol. Just curious...what app did you use as a host? Which synth(s) if any (unless it was all AUM's File Player)? Which effects?
my kinda guy (or gal). nice composition.
Thanks to you both.
@jwmmakerofmusic this was all made in AUM. I found 2 samples I thought sounded good together and played them through files players. One has some Blackhole reverb on it and the other I slowed to half speed.
For the “melody” I sent a semirandom stream of MIDI from PolyBud into my beloved Mellowpiano Big Softy in MU Waverley. This was processed through the default preset in Rymdigare and the Desert Shores preset in Other Desert Cities. A little compression from RoughRider3, a little tweaking in Grand Finale.
That's so cool! I do have Polybud but have messed around moreso with Ioniarics for MIDI generation. I definitely need to revisit Polybud!
Blackhole is such an amazing reverb, and if that Eventide sale is still ongoing, you might be able to finish their reverb bundle for free. I did last night and it shocked the hell out of me. 😂 It all depends on the country you live in though. Some of our mates here weren't able to do so.
I absolutely LOVE Rymdigare a LOT! That is the best Ambient effect app I've ever used. I always slept on "Other Desert Cities" since it was iPad only, but after trying to set up a project in AUM on my iPhone, I really did find out how shite my SE 2's processor really is, and I airdropped my audio to my M1 Pro. 😂 So, I think I will get "Other Desert Cities" tomorrow once I wake up.
I have a huge Ambient project I'm currently working on setting up, and I messed up spectacularly this round. 😂 My first mess up. I think I overused Korvpressor and it turned the signal into mush, so I scrapped the AUM project and will try again tomorrow with far less compression.
...right, listening to your "unexciting" piece of Ambient made me feel better and helped rebalance me. Thank you for sharing how you did it.
Yes, look at PolyBud again. It’s my favorite of the “-Bud” apps.
Ioniarics makes my head spin.
I already have all the Eventide reverbs so the bundle price is $0.00 for me. 🙂
The one Eventide app I don’t have is the TriceraChorus. Oddly, the “Complete My Bundle” price is $7.01. The TriceraChorus price, as you may know, is $6.99. I tried the thing where you scroll to the bottom of the page, to no avail.
Let me know how you like Other Desert Cities. I think it’s pretty fab.
And thank you again for your kind words. It means more than it might to me coming from someone whose work I respect and admire.
I’m looking forward to hearing your ambient project.
I think your description is wrong.
1- Beatless is wrong. There are what seems to be an infinity of frequencies pulsating in an everlasting dance.
2- unexciting is also wrong, this is really exciting, at least to my ears
3- featureless is also wrong. There are what seems to be an infinity of intricate textures at play.
This reminds me of a lot of things. As if GYBE! were trying to sound like Brian Eno with Daniel Lanois together with Mogwaï who would be trying to sound like Stars Of The Lid.
I must agree with @jwmmakerofmusic. This piece is way too short. I love it and would like to hear it for a longer time. Please upload a longer version. This track is better than any anxiolytic and should be prescribed without any limitation. Keep on the good work.
This is awesome and lovely. I am glad I listened and will again. Thank you
Nice!
Relaxing and like jwm stated, I am floating somewhere.
Rene
I sure will. Not for the current Ambient project since that's all loop-based, but for sure for my next dive into sonic lands of the unknown.
Oh yeah, that app has a little bit of a learning curve for sure. But, this video should clear it up.
Leave it to our mate Gav to clear up the mud.
HA! Awesome! Eventide is so amazing!
🤣 Unreal how there's a two-cent difference. The audacity of them. 🤣 (Joking.)
Yep, just purchased. I will be using it on my current Ambient project. Since the piece has an Ancient Egyptian flavour, the aptly named app will fit perfect as a bit of a secret nod. The piece is "The Wrath of Seth" and will be my most ambitious undertaking yet!
🥹 Damn, that made my day. Thank you so much, my friend. I tell you, your piece is anything but "unexciting". Just a few minutes of respite in an otherwise noisy world full of bullshit.
Well, here's a behind-the-scenes peek.

The first instance is the dry output from two instances of Beathawk driven by Atom Piano Roll 2. (OMG, it's not semi-generative?!? 😱 ) Then, listen to how the second instance is transformed into the ethereal plane as Eventide Shimmer Reverb and Crystalline are added. 😃 (Yeah, I scrapped the project last night, lol, so I'll have to attempt to recreate the settings in Shimmer and Crystalline. 🤣 Ah well, I can do it easy-peasy.)
I am excited for unexciting. It is exciting. you might even say I am With the Beatless.
*p.s.: Great Minds dept… spookily enough, and I kid you not, I spent this afternoon (before I listened to this, honest!) starting to work on something which doesn’t sound a million miles away from this, based on a quick ‘field recording’ of someone playing their flute in a garden I blagged this morning while dog walking. Seriously… the work in progress so far could be a companion piece! Watch out for ‘Tindalos’ in a day or so.
Thank you for your thoughtful comments. I see now that some of my words were a bit imprecise. I’ll try to clarify.
You’re right, beats, in the general sense, are everywhere. By “beatless” I meant the boom boom boom tyranny of the 4 on the floor.
I feel that as time goes on there’s way too much stimulation in the world, especially in the world of media. I’m trying to make the piece of music that will be voted “Least Likely to be in the SuperBowl Halftime Show.” 🙂
I try to make music that coalesces into a homogeneous, unified structure with no virtuosic or technical wizardry to call attention to itself. That’s what I meant by “featureless.”
Again, I thank you for your kind words.
Can't wait to hear that !
Hey @Svetlovska maybe we should do a split single!
We can call it Meet the Beatless! 🙂
I'm looking forward to hearing this! Tag me mate.
very lovely work. xxx
