Scaler for iPhone - an alternative?
I know, it’s disappointing that Scaler only runs on iPad, but I may have found a fun alternative.
Got a new toy (Roland J-6 Chord Sequencer) and I’m loving how it works as a USB midi and audio interface synced to the iPhone… Who knew Roland could ever figure out class compliant USB interfaces?
Anyway, a great portable setup for me 👍

What a cute little setup!
How good are the headphones?
Pensato, Tonaly and Tonality each cover some ground. I’ve seen Suggester being mentioned as well.
They’re ok, a bit bassy. I wanted on-ear models as over-ear get too hot in the sub-tropical climate I live in. These are also Bluetooth and ANC, so get used for all round listening.
I’ve got Suggester and Tonality, and they’re both great. The difference with the Roland unit is that it also has 100 “performances” somewhat like Scaler, that can be individually applied to each step in a sequence.
And the fact that it has a brilliant sounding Juno 6 synth engine.
StepPolyArp + ChordPolyPad?
I'm not totally sure what Scaler does (and wonder why there's no option for a smaller footprint regarding samples
)
But besides the above mentioned and awesome apps, Navichord is one of my chord exploring/performing tools
Btw, the J6 is so tiny and cute. I'm totally craving it
Really, what’s that go for, price wise?
Not AU, not as many features, and not quite the same, but Chordbot can set up chord progressions, multiple parts of a song, show you suggested chords, and has a bunch of different types of performances per instrument. You can then export the multitrack midi into something like Xequence 2, or Cubasis.
Thanks!
Shame they're on the bassy side. I guess it's hard for certain tech to buck that trend. Not sure if you've checked out Morphit, by Toneboosters. It might have a profile for this model. On iPhone this'll only help with music-production, but I think the program also comes embedded in one of the Android music players.
Retail in the US is $199, should be available cheaper once stock is more freely available.
The Juno engine is sublime, albeit only 4 voice and not much editing - 64 presets with only filter/resonance, attack/decay, delay and reverb controls.
Having a USB audio and midi interface provides a few interesting options with iOS devices. And a headphone Jack! 👍
Super quick and easy way to get some nice chord progressions happening, and totally portable.
Thanks, will have a look at Morphit. Love Toneboosters stuff… 👍
I’ve got Chordbot and have enjoyed using it as you suggest.

I think a big difference with the Roland unit is just how immediate it is - turn it on and go. The 100 pre-defined chord sets help with that, though you can input whatever chords you like. It reminds me of scaler in how quickly I can discover chord progressions I would never thought of. Particularly as I’m primarily a bass and guitar player, with very limited keyboard chops.
And I keep coming back to how great it sounds…
I thought this video made a few good points about the Roland:
