JWM - The Wrath of Seth

This one...sheesh, this was a pain in the arse to create. 😂 After crafting the musical loop, I attempted to live produce it last night, and everything sounded shite. Come to find out that Korvpressor isn't the end-all, be-all compressor I thought it was since it muddied everything up. Instead, the best compressor that balances transparent compression with ease of use is Bleass Compressor.

So yes, the production notes are in the SoundCloud description like usual. Cheers, enjoy, and leave a comment if you wish.

Just gonna bump this one up in case some folks didn't see it. Hoping to get some comments on this one. 😅 Cheers.

Edit: Okay, fine, ignore this one I guess even though I worked harder on this one than previous pieces. 🤷

  • Hey @jwmmakerofmusic, I like this piece. It is dark with fascinating, almost exotic undertones that made me want to hear some kind of melodic motif over it or some other element. Maybe it wouldn’t be consistent with your ambient/atonal vision for it, but I couldn’t help but feel like you could take it further in some other way. Please don’t take that as criticism, rather as a high assessment of your abilities. Also, it is already very cool as is, and I don’t really know what I’m talking about.. Keep on pushing the envelope

A definite step up. The ghostly melody over the ambience, and the link to a strong narrative (not to mention namechecking one of my favourite Ancient Egyptian deities) gets two big thumbs up from me. :)

  • I see that you had issues with compression. I wonder where do you need compression for?
Do you use compression before or after reverb?
Maybe integration of WOOTT from Brambos could spice things up? (Multiband compressor, Like OTT)
The middle east sounding instrument get a bit drowned under, for me, it would be cooler if it cuts through the track as a thread where you can hold on to it.
The sssshhhh noise that gets louder through the track, is that tape degradation? I don't like it, haha. Its too overwhelming at the end, and makes me nervous.
This was my honest opinion. I have to say i listened it on my macbook pro (2014), where the dynamics op these pesky speakers lack.
I do like these kind of soundscapes, but to keep my attention to it, there must be something that makes you curious. The candy that you want till you got to the finish line :).

  • Quite dark, and also have a bit of melody which is a welcome extra.
This creation has the "go for more" vibe and keeps me in the music.
    Then, there's the growl.
    Well done.

I didn't take it as criticism but rather as an inspiring suggestion. 😃 A prompt if you will. A new direction to try. New lands to explore. You know what you're talking about, and I like that type of feedback that can steer me down a new path. "The Wrath of Seth" one did have a bit of a melodic motif to it, along with all of the atonal sounds. But, I think the next piece will be more driven by Ioniarics and Cykle. Maybe something simpler, or something more complex, or whichever direction the sea of thought takes me. 🙂 What new planes of existence are out there? Let's explore and find out together!

Thank you so much mate. Back when I was a kid, I loved Anubis and thought he was amazing (I still do lol), but over time, Seth became so much more appealing to me. He is strong. He is powerful. He is inspiring. He is fear. He is the embodiment of beauty in chaos, something I know @iOSTRAKON will be very familiar with. 😉 Is it any wonder why our ancient ancestors worshipped him (or the idea of him)? Who knows if he was a real being or not? He is worth ramping my Ambient abilities a step up and spending more time crafting this piece than my previous pieces.

(Note to self...someday make a piece inspired by Anubis. "In the Valley of Death" or some sort of title. I certainly need to read more about him to reacquaint myself.)

Usually before, unless it's Alteza lol, and I sometimes need light compression to even out the volume as sometimes the samples and effects I use can become pretty wild. Korvpressor is nice, but Bleass Compressor is god tier. It has an adjustable knee, which is an instant win in my book. Usually when I set the compressor, I adjust the ratio to be close to 1:1, and the threshold until the gain reduction is somewhat affected (but never beyond -1dB max, and never constantly affected). Then when I go wild with effects, much of the dynamics are still retained, but without going too nuts.

Maybe integration of WOOTT from Brambos could spice things up? (Multiband compressor, Like OTT)

That's actually a cool idea! I used to use it on my basses in NS2, but perhaps I can use it to add a more chaotic texture to a drone or some other sonic element.

The middle east sounding instrument get a bit drowned under, for me, it would be cooler if it cuts through the track as a thread where you can hold on to it.

I see. :) Well, for me, the intention was for it to become drowned under as I played with the levels during the live performance. It became secondary to the utter chaos that ensued, which was the point and intention. If it weren't, I'd have over time turned up the level of it and reduced the wet signal of Crystalline to really make it pop through. 😉

The sssshhhh noise that gets louder through the track, is that tape degradation? I don't like it, haha. Its too overwhelming at the end, and makes me nervous.

That's actually the radio feature in Rymdigare. 😉 Seth is all about destruction afterall, and so to increase that destruction more and more throughout the track was the intention. Both in the chaos of the sounds being played back through File Player and in sonic degradation.

This was my honest opinion. I have to say i listened it on my macbook pro (2014), where the dynamics op these pesky speakers lack.

Lol. That's fair. These type of soundscapes definitely are better listened to on headphones, but I'm glad you listened nevertheless.

I do like these kind of soundscapes, but to keep my attention to it, there must be something that makes you curious. The candy that you want till you got to the finish line :).

I'm interested to hear you expand upon this line of thought. This might inspire my next piece.

Thank you so much my friend. 🙂 I think for my next piece, I'll be using more melody with a bit of Ioniarics and Cykle. And maybe Atom Piano Roll 2 to drive a drone if I wish there to be a drone.

  • Thanks for the explanation and your idea behind the musical soundscape.
The thing about candy is something that you hear snippets from in the beginning, and comes to full extent in the end. I can't explain it really, haha. Something like buildups.

Ahhhh, I think I know exactly what you mean mate. :) Kind of like sections in a loose sense. Like having a hook or two in a song's chorus.

  • Yes, a kind of tension and release, where with every new tension, something is added till a grand finale, haha

Exactly! 😃 Sometimes I get so wrapped up in how I can mangle sound in new ways that I forget that a simple adjustment of levels and lowpass filters, aka keeping it more simple, can often be enough.
