Using iPad Live in 2022
Hi All,
The time has come where I need to dust off my iPad and get it gig ready, it's been a couple of years since my last outing so I'm curious to know what my best options in terms of software are.
Last time I used AUM, which is great, but it's a mixer, I have to load all the instruments for the whole set which isn't ideal on my lowly gen 1 12" iPad pro.
So I'm wondering what the best options are now in 2022, has much changed ?
My main requirement is fast patch switching between 16 or so instruments (either via midi CC or touching the screen) , or alternatively something with a more set list based approach where instruments per song are loaded (like Apple Mainstage) . Also need to be able to load sample patches, my own created instruments , exs or sf2 or something.
It looks like AB3 now has MIDI, could this be a better option to AUM ?
Beatmaker 3 looks decent, although last time I tried notes would stick on when you change instruments, I plan to check this later to see if it's fixed . Question on this is whether it might be possible to set up the 16 pads on BM3 to switch patches? That could work. Integrated native effects on BM3 would be a big plus.
Anyone using Keystage or Camelot Pro ? Worth a look ?
Thanks,
sTu

You asked if “AUM would be a better option than AUM”??
Maybe an AUM hosting Loopy Pro Audio Units setup would work for you? Btw, I think AUM has always had MIDI hasn’t it?
Ahhh doh, yeh I meant to write 'looks like AB3 now has MIDI' , edited the post, thank you.
Hadn't considered loopy , will look in to it, thank you !
I'd recommend Camelot Pro or Keystage for your need to switch instruments for performance.
You can use AudioLayer for sfz or exs instruments or KQ Sampei for sf2 which can be hosted in either Camelot or Keystage.
I use Camelot Pro in the same sort of fashion as you describe and I like it pretty well. Never tried Keystage as I just can’t get over the look of the GUI.
I use AudioLayer for samples (within Camelot Pro). Though, TBH it’s been a bit buggy after the last update.
The nice thing about Camelot Pro vs AUM is that Camelot loads your whole set upon starting the app. This means that patch switching is instant. The same can’t be said for AUM.
@mtenk thank you for this info! can I ask about „instant patch switching”: is a patch include changing from auv3 instrument and effect chains to completly another, or it mean only changing saved presets in the same chains of auv3 plugins?
what about the stability? I mean hard tests like switching multiple times and very fast, nothing crashing? thanks in advance!
Stability seems solid except for the recent issue I mentioned with AudioLayer. But, that’s more of an AudioLayer issue, I think?
I’m not sure I understand your question regarding patch switching. In my case I’m referring to switching between scenes within Camelot (not switching actual patches on synths/etc…).
So, for example I might have something like this in Camelot…
Song 1: Organ and piano (using Hammond BX-3 and Lofi Tape)
Song 2: Ambient Sound (using FRMS)
Song 3: Mellotron Flute (using Sampletron)
Song 4: Piano (using AudioLayer)
Song 5: Mellotron Strings (using Sampletron)
Song 6: Rhodes and Synth (using NeoSoul Keys and Pure Synth Platinum)
Etc, etc…
When I load my set, Camelot loads ALL of the AUV3 plugins mentioned above so the songs are able to load instantly via a press of a button sending a program change message.
…The one thing I wish @audiomodeling would add to Camelot is the ability to do midi learn within itself.
Thank you for the example. I have Camelot Pro but I haven't dwelved into it as it seems so intimidating. I really would live to learn how to create a set like you mentioned. Will look up YouTube vids for tutorials. Thanks!
ok I see
for similar usage I use now loopy pro:
by touching (or midi learned with midi feedback) pad on launchpad, I mute/ unmute instruments - all loaded at the start - so I can recall scene, or just toggle single instruments/ effects, and there is also key range - so I can have the same midi input routed to different instruments and change via buttons what actual key range is used etc.
i wish drambo one day would allow to midi learn „show / hide auv3 panel gui” for each separate plugins…. for now I use loopy pro, but honestly I believe AUM is also the answer for live usage.
Thanks for the suggestions everyone, after reviewing a few vids I've dived in with KeyStage, it's a pretty deep app! Looks like I will be able to do pretty much everything I want there, was a bit disappointed by the amount of IAP on it though, only realised after purchase
Cool thank you, really needed to find some exs sampler options !
