Do apps get updated to universal free usually?

I only use my iPhone but do have an iPad (I just prefer it). There are many apps that are iPad only I wish were universal, I’ve been buying these in sales in the hopes that one day they will update to support iPhone or that maybe apple will allow iPad apps on their bigger max variants one day.

Is this pointless? Do apps ever get updated to universal/iPhone for free or would it more likely require me buying them again if it happened?

Want to check as this list is growing for me and haven’t seen 1 get updated yet, am I wasting my money if I don’t plan on using them on iPad?

  • Every developer is different. I don’t think there is a “usual” with any of them.

  • ("Universal" in this post refers to iPad/iPhone compatible, not iPad/iPhone/Mac compatible.)

I'd say its getting less common that apps go universal after the fact. More and more they release as universal or they stay iPad only due to the developer not feeling the UI is adaptable to the smaller format, or just not wanting the hassle of managing the seemingly endless screen size variations.

That said, I haven't seen any apps for quite some time that have a separate purchase for an iPhone version. That would mean supporting two separate apps. That's really rare.

If an app does go universal after initial release, the App Store handles it in a really confusing way. It doesn't appear in purchased items on the new device. It appears that you have to re-purchase it. You don't! You have to go through all the steps to purchase it, including authorizing the purchase. Only - at the very end of the process, after you've agreed to pay, it tells you that you already purchased it and you'll get the update for free. It's extremely stupid. But if the app is shown as iPad/iPhone compatible, and you've purchased it on the other platform, you will not be charged (** based on my experience. It's your money, so don't hold me responsible if I'm wrong. :# )

Purchasing any app based on the hope that it will get further capabilities down the road is a gamble at best. IMO it's best to assume apps will not improve and not purchase them unless I can be happy with the purchase as-is at the time of purchase.

  • I think you should wait for universal support first. There’s not much movement towards adding iPhone support if it wasn’t considered at the start, I think. Maybe someone has good data on this.

I recall 2 apps from way back that had 2 versions.

I think a developer should plan for a small screen if they intend to support all devices.

And now they need to decide if they want to support M1 Macs too. I think they will spend more time on this new potential market.

If they do, or it’s something the developer plans on doing, so far it’s usually been a free update. Sometimes a separate app. That doesn’t mean it will always be free as developers looks for ways to be profitable and sustain income in the iOS music app market. It can be hard to strike the right balance, not overpriced, but still make money to support updates and development.

Thanks for clearing that up, so there’s hope but pretty unlikely then. Its not a waste as I may return to using iPad in future, but will definitely rethink iPad only purchases now. Much appreciated

  • It’s probably not a great idea to just buy and hope. Maybe reach out to a developer and ask, or search for any information in the forum, social media, their website. There’s definitely no guarantee any app will be universal unless the developer says it’s on the roadmap.

Yeah I will now thanks, does anyone happen to know if SynthMaster one was ever iPad only then updated? SynthMaster 2 is high on my iPhone wish list which I brought recently in the sale

  • Definitely don’t hold your breath for it.
I’m still waiting for BM3 to go universal as it was promised when it was released years ago. 😏

You could (nicely and politely) consider leaving an App Store review praising the app profusely and then (nicely and politely) asking in your review if it could be updated to include iPhones….
also many developers have an email address where you could request such things, I have had many of my wishes come true from app developers via their email accounts.

  • Most devs, if they do universal, will do so at launch. Kai Aras lately has not been, but then releases universal after a few months. Audio Damage has made it very clear that their synths will never be universal because it’s not worth the effort to them.

It’s never good to assume. I always ask and wait until I get the answer.
