Ouch! This is: The School Of Wounds

“He doesn't know the sentence that has been passed on him?" "No," said the officer again, pausing a moment as if to let the explorer elaborate his question, and then said: "There would be no point in telling him. He'll learn it on his body.” ― Franz Kafka, In the Penal Colony

I first read Kafka’s bizarre story of a machine which etches an account of the perpetrators crimes into their flesh as the actual means of execution as a young teenager, and the sadomasochistic weirdness of the story has never left me. More impressive to me than his better known ‘The Metamorphosis’. Perhaps because there is a deep truth in there, which I encountered again years later in training as a psychotherapist, when I learnt how psychic and physical traumas (think: PTSD, abuse survivors) can be ‘held’, not just in the mind, but also in the body, long after any ostensible wounds have healed…

We all, one way or another, have to graduate from The School Of Wounds…

This was built from two AUM File Player loops of Steel Guitar Pro, with embellishments from a third ‘live’ instance, Model D bass, zuzzed up with Mammoth Bass Amp (https://apps.apple.com/gb/app/mammoth-bass-amp/id1517411435 bargain at £1.79) , Waverly piano, Thermo Synth buzzes and Phosphor twiddly bits. It depends heavily on Atom loops captured from ShiftBud, but is a little more deliberately organised (mainly through live mixing) than my usual dins. Enjoy/comment/diss etcetera… :)
