Local collaboration setups?

I am trying to introduce my fiancé to the wonderful world of iOS music. The trick for me is that I have never done an in-person collab session before. We’ve tried a jam session on GarageBand but our iPads did not recognize each other. She has an original iPad Air, so it won’t run anything past iPadOS 12. That may or may not be the reason the GB didn’t connect.

The good news is that I can share my apps with get through Apple’s Family Sharing. I’ve got AB3, Cubasis 3, Drambo, and a few synths and effects.

My guess is that Ableton Link is key to the solution here. Has anyone found an Link-based setup they like using with others? I’d like to find a way to save the audio or at least the MIDI from the sessions. Is there a route other than Link that I’m missing?

As a backup, I have Ableton Live Lite on my Macbook, so we could do an iPad/MacBook setup. I would have tried a jam session between GB on iPad and GB on Mac, but the Mac version doesn’t have jam sessions because 🤷‍♂️

  • In case anyone else has this question in the future, here was our setup: I used Audiobus and set her iPad as input for either MIDI or audio. She does not have any paid music apps, but she could use NodeBeat to control any instrument I set up in the MIDI output on my iPad. I then set her iPad as an audio input and she could play directly from Audiokit Synth One into my iPad.

I could record the output of either method by placing Cubasis 3 or Audioshare at the audio output slot.

Pretty basic setup, but was satisfying to see it work after just a little experimentation!

  • Thank you for sharing your solution! My wife doesn’t really enjoy my music so I have to admit to being envious. Glad you were able to get it sorted out. Maybe you can share some of your creations here.
