Mastering (in praise of Cubasis)

As someone who has been (some might say overly) critical of Cubasis in the past, and prompted by @Jamie_Mallender, I'm going to publicly sing its praises here.

So, I've been amateurishly mastering my own stuff for a long time using various techniques and tools, all the while learning a little each time. A couple of years ago I bought Ozone for Logic and the first few times I used it I got much better results than anything I'd tried before, it was like magic. But then about a year ago, and I've no idea why, I started getting truly awful results out of it. I've no idea whether it was a software update or something, but the results, whatever I did, even just using the presets, all came out unusable. So after seeing the Cubasis master strip get some love on here, I gave it a go, and it really is superb. The masters I get out of Cubasis are better than Ozone ever gave me. The master strip is intuitive, well designed, and produces really top quality output.

I'm intrigued as to how much use it's getting from others here, and if not that, then what are you mastering with?

Tbh I don‘t even care for what‘s commonly called „mastering“.
I try to make a proper mix and then set the final amount of loudness, usually by something like ProL2 or Maxima, and that‘s about it.
All these attempts with multiband and squeezing every bit of loudness out of a mix just spoil the sound.
It‘s ridiculous how people hunt for specs with 0.001% thd in input and output channels, rap about 32bit data width and then ruin everything by plugins o:)

  • I do like Cubasis and the Fab plugins for mastering groups of tracks together. I don't see much point in doing much mastering (mashering) to an individual track by itself, as Telefunky says it is best to get the mixes right. Mastering for me is just getting a collection to sound cohesive together, mostly just basic eq, sometimes levels automation and then Pro L for Lufs, rarely do I compress a master unless it is way out of whack with the other tracks and I am too lazy to address the mix, but then boo on me.

(PS. my favourite thing about Cubasis is being able to jot down notes on each track. I will often collect my tunes in progress in Cubasis so I can just lay on the bed relaxed and listen to everything together, just making notes about what to adjust and tweak later when I am back at the computer.)

  • On iOS Cubasis and the Fabfilter plug ins would be my first choice too.
