Can you turn off Apple's auto gain compensation?

I find Apple's auto gain compensation very frustrating. I would like to drive and clip my tracks how I want. I use Barricade to handle the peaks so no need for Apple to dim sounds in my mix while I'm in a session.

Is there a way to turn it off?

@j_liljedahl I remember you mentioning this on Discord. Does Measurement Mode toggle it in AUM (I read a reference to kAudioSessionMode_Measurement so making a non-developer leap here...)

    Measurement mode turns it off.

Ah, why didn't I know that! Thank you.

Do Cubasis, BM3, and Drambo have equivalent settings, I wonder?

  • Also, measurement mode is on in Loopy Pro when echo cancellation is on.

  • Cubasis and BM3 both have the option to use measurement mode.
Stand Alone Drambo doesn't have it yet but if you use it as an AUv3 it will follow the host.

Current down-sides of turning on measurement mode is that you can't record in stereo and the volume level drops down to barely audible compared to when it's on.

But yes, it can be a tad annoying when the output level is in 'ghost mode' (ie. the built-in limiter/eq auto-adjusts the speaker output).

This is especially noticeable with the M1 Pro's speakers when the session starts to creep closer to 0dbFS.
It's far more 'aggressive' level adjustments than on the iPad Air 2.

When using external audio-interface turning measurement mode on/off doesn't do anything.

@Samu so you are saying if I’m using an audio interface then it overrides the iPads measurement mode and it’s not a thing to worry about?

measurement mode only applies to the built-in mic and internal speakers. and the system does not do auto gain compensation with audio interfaces

    Yepp!

Awesome. Thank you @Samu and @espiegel123

  • What actually is measurement mode? Technically?

It disables most iOS DSP processing so theoretically you should get as clean and un-processed signal from the microphones as possible and the speakers are fed with a mostly unprocessed signal (ie. no eq or limiting etc).

It has zero effect when using an external audio-interface.

I believe it simply means "without automatic adjustment", so it could be used meaure sound intensity.

  • And you say it’s mono?
