[Audiobus Remote] Alternatives to Bluetooth MIDI?

edited August 2022 in General App Discussion

Hi,
I have 1xiPad 6th (iOS 14) and one old iPad 2 (iOS 9.3.5) and I'm trying to use the old iPad as secondary device for making music.

I have purchased Audiobus Remote on the AppStore and it is able to run on the old iPad.
The iPadOld should run AB-Remote and connect to Audiobus on the iPad6.

Unfortunately the old iPad seems to have issues with the wireless modules:

  • WiFi doesn't work great, sometimes disconnects, but works.
  • Bluetooth is active but is not able to discover other Apple devices.

I made a couple of bluetooth tests on the different devices and:

  • iPadOld CAN see ONLY an old JBL-speaker.
  • iPadOld does NOT see iPad6; AND viceversa. (<-- this is the main problem)
  • iPadOld does NOT see MacBook; but the MacBook CAN see iPadOld.
  • iPad6 CAN see the MacBook; and viceversa.

But I need the iPadOld to see the iPad6, and I'm not sure what's the problem here:
maybe a too old BT version, or a broken BT module.

After trying a lot I wonder:
Is there a way to run AB-Remote over WiFi instead?

Or am I completely cut out of using the app?
Do I have other options to get it working?

  • What is the iOS version of the old iPad?

Have you enabled Bluetooth inside the app as either Bluetooth advertising, or Bluetooth connections?

  • iOS 9.3.5

Check my question, I have updated it to add more details and clarity.

Bluetooth is enabled on every device. All devices have Discoverable enabled.

Audiobus Remote doesn't have any setting; it is just a screen asking to enable BT and to keep the other device closeby.

IPad 2’s don’t have the the BT LE mode used for midi.

    Nooouuu! 😭
I have several old Apple touch devices but can't use even one...

I didn't know the difference between the BT types.
Is there any chance that the AB-Remote's midi can travel via WiFi or cables?
Or is it exclusively on Bluetooth MIDI?

iPhone 4s was the first phone with BT LE I believe - I still have 2 of them in service as Bluetooth transmitters and occasional AB remotes.

  • Might be worth it to just buy an older device with BT LE, you can get them pretty cheap depending on how far u go back.

  • It's exclusively BTLE, I'm afraid, yeah...

Checked again, and I was wrong: it's an iPhone 4, rather than 4s 😫
Either the old iPhone and old iPad I own are giveaways from friends, that I really never used; all devices just one step away from being useful.

    Thank you for confirming Michael!

Yeah, am checking the secondhand market. Even though it's depressing to have so many Apple devices already and not being able to use them.
