Another mostly modular adventure: Black Sun

“When he opened the sixth seal, I looked, and behold, there was a great earthquake; and the sun became black as sackcloth.” - Revelation 6:12

In the alchemical magnum opus, the process of working with the prima materia to create the philosopher's stone, Sol niger (black sun) refers to the first stage, the nigredo (blackening). In a text ascribed to Marsilio Ficino, three suns are described: black, white, and red, corresponding to the three most used alchemical color stages. Of the sol niger he writes:

“The body must be dissolved in the subtlest middle air: The body is also dissolved by its own heat and humidity; where the soul, the middle nature holds the principality in the colour of blackness all in the glass: which blackness of Nature the ancient Philosophers called the crows head, or the black sun.”
— Marsilius Ficinus, "Liber de Arte Chemica"

This alchemical black sun, a shadow sun, as Jung noted, is therefore emblematic of the processes of transformation.

Almost entirely made on Modular, as a live mix riding the faders on the mixer I lashed up from two Doepfer A-130-8 Octal VCAs and my Michigan Synthworks XVI, recording via Zoom U-44 into AUM as the DAW.

I was going to make a video version of this, still might. But for now: Enjoy, comment, ignore, etc…

“Seeing into darkness is clarity. Knowing how to yield is strength. Use your own light and return to the source of light. This is called practicing eternity.” - Lao Tzu

    Great composition, love the qoutes, and yes please to a video version. Very atmospheric.

  • Magnifique !

  • Massive! 😃👍
    +1 for Lao Tzu.

  • Wonderful journey.

  • Very sweet drone bro. Definitely establishes a vibe

  • If this lasted all day I’d still be listening.

  • modulargrid.net-link to your rack? :)

  • @H34rtc0r3 : nope, but there’s this:

  • @Toastedghost : Thanks for the comment, and the listen! I probably will, but not until we have this horror movie thing squared away. (It’s why I posted it now - terrified I’d over write it trying to make room for the movie stuff.)

    @JanKun : Merci! :)

    @Spidericemidas : Thank you, and well, obviously. He has to be in everyone’s top three of 6th C BCE Chinese Philosophers, right? You guys do all have a Top Ten of those, right? ;)

    @LinearLineman : Well, when it comes to my, ah, ‘compositional technique’ I think it is fair to say that I am always travelling hopefully, even if I rarely arrive. :)

    @Wrlds2ndBstGeoshredr : thank you. It definitely does, but of what…

    @rottencat : thank you! That is pretty much how I road test these. I put it on loop play, and if I still like it after an hour or so, I post it.

    @lasselu : Thanks!

    Seriously - thanks all for the comments, makes the effort seem worthwhile.
