Kicking out the (modular) jams: Pray To It

“What are we going to do, man? It’s drawing in power from everything.”
“At this point,” said Rackham, judiciously. “You might want to consider praying to it.”

Mixed and recorded live from the rack directly into AUM.

So I’m beginning to understand just how wonderful the FX Aid XL is: a great bang-for-buck digital fx module that you can download new effects to. Mine is mostly filled with awesomely huge reverbs, obviously (!) but yesterday I downloaded an ‘808’ bass drum and snare combo (my rack has no dedicated percussion voices though I do have sample options.)

I took the new voices, driven by Pam’s New Workout, for a spin, along with my Eowave Weather Drones on bass rumble duty, and the jam took me, rather unexpectedly, into sort-of @iOSTRAKON territory. Imagine my surprise!

If only because it gives me a chance to name check one of my favourite albums ever, Chrome’s Half Machine Lip Moves, released, astonishingly, in 1979 (!) And it was already their third studio album. Those guys were ahead of the curve. My (accidental) vibe kinda reminded me of this:

I do know one thing. It ain’t ambient. :)

  • I like how the drums compliment this. Like two great tastes that you discover taste great together.

  • Hi Svetlovska,
The drums are really nice, but I wanted the other sounds to float on top of the drums.
Actually, as the song goers on, the drums are laid back lower in the mix, and the other effects are on top of the drums, which is really nice.
    Totally, not ambient.
    I like this.

  • @MadeofWax : Ha! I very rarely use drums, except for a single ‘doom drum’ on my dark ambient stuff, but I do like the old motorik beat of white noise snare and bass drum pulse, ( The Roland CR78 is my favourite ever machine); and when I found I could add these into a module I really only thought of as a reverb (!!) I just had to try it. Resulted in something a bit outside my usual orbit.

@ReneAsologuitar : thank you for the thoughtful comment. Yes, I’m still very much feeling my way with modular and integrating it with my iPad focussed workflow.

Here I’m managing the mix live from the Michigan Synthworks XVI 16 faders, eyeing more sophisticated live modular mixers with interest (but dagnabit, they are expensive! - e.g. this WMD performance mixer:

but I’m reluctantly coming round to the thought that I might need to revert to a Mac based DAW to capture all the streams simultaneously at full volume, and ‘fix it in the mix’ after the fact. Still a work in progress…
