An excellent place to start for a more subtle feel is the DAT PUNCH preset go to TWEAK and back of the SIZZLE to around 19.4

Excellent video Doug and a good tip for subtle usage!

  • Distortion on drums is really common. When most people say "tape sound" or "warmth" they mean distortion. Distortion can be very subtle, or it can be in your face. The thing I heard in the video that I loved was the extra weight and thickness the drums got with the more subtle distortion.

Check out "My Girl" and listen to the way the drums distort on the fills, or when the levee breaks, which has all kinds of distortion going on (not fuzz box type stuff). Also, think of the possibilities of paralleling some distortion tucked under your main drum track ( try the fxpansion chancomp in auria and see what that bias control does- very cool).

With that being said, clean drums are great too. It all depends on the context.

Yup, to get distortion like this is very easy in Caramel as Doug explained.
Hopefully I will have time today to post another brief demo showing the more subtle side of Caramel.

  • In the meantime, here is the other demo I released today.

  • That's true, I must admit I instantly hated the sound in the videos above, but, true, it's quite common for demo videos and presets to highlight the more extreme sides of new effects. In ToneStack, many of the default presets have been overdone too. I must have missed the more subtle bit that mrufino1 alluded to.

Looking forward to that more subtle demo!

"TOMORROW is the official launch day! Caramel launches Thursday, July 24th at midnight. >Pricing is $4.99 USD." /Holderness Facebook

The waiting game...You lucky Kiwis and Aussies...:(

  • About the discussion above on distortion - it certainly has a place with drums, but I do feel like many of the rhythm apps offer distortion and bitcrusher options, so that's been something available (which isn't to say that Caramel can't still be "better" or "different" than those). Also, as a practical matter, FX apps like WOW Filterbox seem better suited towards something like a drum loop you can play through there while manipulating an X/Y pad or something.

I think his point about this being exciting for guitar is that apps like this one and SquashIt (different developer) can actually work for live guitar playing. Coincidentally, Swoopster didn't quite work for me the way I hoped it would have, but I was less interested in the flanger/modulation aspect to it as was in the fuzz effect. Caramel is entirely focused on the distortion aspect of things, so this looks like a better fit. The Holderness apps allow you to get pretty extreme if you want, so subtlety is key!

One thing I struggled with in Swoopster was controlling output. I'm sure there were output settings, but I don't think either app has an output gauge, though Caramel clearly has an output control independent of the amount of Crunch/Crush/whatever you put into the signal.

  • I have all your apps, and the one thing that really annoys me (that the video reminded me of) is how it's hard to tell if the bypass and other buttons are on or off. In the above video: Green vs. Brown- which is on and which is off? I know you can hear the difference, but I'd like to be able to tell just by looking even when no sound is going through.

Sorry, had to get that off my chest, it's been bugging me since I first bought a Holderness app.

Nice! Is $6.49 the Australian price or do we expect that in the U.S. as well? Crystalline was $4.99 at release, so that was my assumption for this one as well.

Is there an explanation anywhere yet of what terms such as the following actually mean?

CRUNCH (sounds like a gain boost?)

    CRUSH (bitcrusher - resolution reduction?)

    GIRTH (bass boost?)

    SIZZLE (?)

    BITE (treble boost?)

Reminds me of those DOD guitar pedals from the 90's where they tried to replace things like "Bass" and "Treble" with "BUTT" and "FACE", and were surprised that people didn't instantly connect with that. Haha.

  • It's US$4.99

And will hit the US AppStore at 11 PM Eastern time. EU AppStore in 3-4 hrs.

Finally got to try this bad boy out. I ran a bunch of drum loops (and some other stuff) of mine through CARAMEL via Audiobus and also a session via IAA. And this thing is seriously working some magic on the sounds. Yes, it does subtle. But more importantly, it just sounds sooo crunchy and juicy when cranked up! Really smooth, full and warm character to it (you can do more spiky/digital sounds too tho). This is going to see a lot of use here:)

Yea basically. CRUNCH is your gain-saturate-overdrive-distortion thing (in that order:). CRUSH is your bit crusher (a very good one at that). GIRTH boosts the low-end to fatten things up, adding more oomph, and SIZZLE takes care of the other end of the spectrum (they work well in tandem, great oomph but a bit too muddy with the GIRTH, counter-act with the SIZZLE, so to speak). BITE adds more....well bite. It kinda boosts some of the mid/high range of things, and whatever other mojo it's doing (I've only been able to use the app for 30 minutes or so with some cheap AKG headphones). Those last 3 parameters kinda sculpts the sounds frequency spectrum - should add that they're not just simple EQ bands, but each have their own character like their name implies... And the other 2 parameters takes care of the above mentioned things. The fact that all these parameters handles left and right channel separately really allows for some cool sounds.

Blah hope that made some sense. It's 00:30 AM here, and had a long day.

I don't think anyone will be the least disappointed with this one (unless you're expecting some amp/cab sim thing, which this definitely is not:). Like Holderness Medias other effect apps, it's definitely a unique fx unit with its own unique sound to it.

  • Thanks @ChrisG! That's a big help!

I will be buying this one on release. Also may look at snapping up other apps in their catalog, or at least Crystalline, which I understand is somewhat distinct from other delay/echo apps.

  • We are live in the United States!

Note that Holderness put Crystalline on Sale for $2.99 and Stereo Design for $1.99. I had a hunch they might do that because of the Crystalline release - bought all 3 for the total of $10!

:D Yup, live in the U.S. and across most AppStores!

  • Seriously, take advantage of the sale to round out your holderness library. $5 for crystalline and stereo designer is a steal.

  • A bit later today we will be a running a competition to celebrate the release of Caramel, Apps up for grabs will be the chance to win any two of the following, STEREO DESIGNER, SWOOPSTER, ECHO PAD or CRYSTALLINE, I will post the start of the comp in its own thread later today, and a big thanks to Chris for supplying the codes for this

Sweet, I'm going to try and catch a few hours sleep but I'll be checking back when I get up.

  • Was in Cleveland yesterday (long story) and saw a guy outside the Hall of Fame there with a tshirt bearing the ancient legend: "If it's too loud you're too old." This is precisely how I feel about having my bit crushed too much; it's me, not it. Strokes and folks. But I'll buy it because of the quality of the dev's previous apps and a latent determination (still) to burn out as opposed to simply fading away...

  • Finally a distortion that doesn't have guitars in mind :)

    That's the spirit.

  • I'd like to see the server load every time after I have uploaded a preset. ^^
