Just Larking About
Larking about is a British term for messing about and in this case, mangling one of the most beautiful pieces of music ever written… The Lark Ascending by Ralph Vaughan Williams.
The Skylark (Alauda arvensis) as famed for its song which it sings while hovering high in the sky.
PS This is my 200th track on SoundCloud… yippee 🎈💥🎸🎶
Little did know when I switched on my first IPad on 20th June 2019 what a wonderful world was opening up in front of me… and many thanks to anybody and everybody who has helped me along the way 👌🙏👍

Top notch screentaring. What did you use for the lead synth in the second part? For the fretless bass in the third part?
Thanks very much @Wrlds2ndBstGeoshredr.
2nd part lead is actually Guitar Overdrive Lead from Roli Noise put through Attack Softener and my default TB Reverb Cathedral setting.
Fretless Bass is BeatHawk Fretless Vibrato from the Total Bass pack through LRC7 and TB Reverb Cathedral.
Surprisingly (it surprised me anyway) the bass part is played by the melody line of a Piano Motifs motif.
Congratulations on 200 SoundCloud tracks!
This is a fine piece of music to celebrate that milestone. Your playing is so expressive and sounds so natural. Looking forward to the next 200!
Oh, my! What are you using for that sax solo?
The Fretless Bass from Piano Motifs is so Weather Report but in the style of Joe Zawinul the keyboardist vs Jaco the Fretless Bass player.
Great track… I wish I new the RVW original better to get the references.
Many thanks @MadeofWax 👍
SWAM Soprano being played by me @McD … pushing my fingers to the limits on that one 😊
Basically it’s the three opening chords, the opening Violin motif and a tiny fragment from later on in the piece. For anybody who hasn’t listened to the original try this (shortened to about 25%of the original) version…
That was very helpful to hear the 3 chords and the violin motifs.
The section with the fretless bass and sax just knocks me out. I’m a sucker for the expressive qualities of those 2 instruments over a typical classic violin tone. Jean Luc Ponty added electronic fax and a very non-vibrato tone that helped make the instrument relevant for my tastes. The classical emotive style is too close the chalk on a black board with that resin being used to grab the string and force oscillations at very high frequencies… it add a breathy noise to the sound that Ponty filters out with FX and some amp saturation like a loud electric guitar that sings… Brian may comes to mind for great singing tone.
Spooky, I was commenting on yours as you were doing mine… I know what you mean about Violin tone, think that’s why generally I prefer the Viola.
Enigmatic Ocean is one of my favourite albums, Ponty, Stuermer and Holdsworth make some (sadly never to be repeated) unbelievable sounds together.
Hi Tony,
Congratulation on your great achievement!
200 tracks, that's a lot of blood, sweat and tears, Bravo!!!
This is a lovely recording, and I love the melody.
Rene
Beautifully done, my friend. Your bicentennial track. What’s the beginning lead? Are you putting these in albums on BandCamp. Free, you know. Ummm, best correct your title, bro.
Thanks @ReneAsologuitar and @LinearLineman.
1st Lead is SWAM Flugelhorn with Hand Mute.
I’ll stick with SoundCloud, I know you have to pay but I can’t be arsed switching 😊
Not sure what you mean with the title , it’s just a British term for messing about…
Smooooooove!
@GeoTony on SoundCloud it says #100.
Ah I understand now @LinearLineman … what you have not allowed for is my slightly flawed numbering convention 😊
The # number refers to when I start tracks, not when I finish them + for reasons that I’m not sure are entirely logical, tracks destined for albums don’t have a # number at all… but you weren’t to know all that 🤔 Thank you for raising it though as it’s another opportunity to bump the track 👍
@GeoTony, sure. I think you might reconsider BandCamp, tho. It’s easy to upload material, ITKS FREE, you can group your tracks in albums, possibly sell some downloads and it’s a terrific archival backup if SoundCloud goes down. No downside, IMHO.
Love it Tony! And congrats on your milestone.
Will look into it again @LinearLineman , thanks for the info…
Cheers @Edward_Alexander , surprised myself when I realised how many there were 🤯
Congrats @GeoTony - some sweet soloing on this.
Nice ideas. I too am a V-W fan. I recently heard his tuba concerto. I'm sure you'd like it. Is there a SWAM tuba? must be.
There is. SWAM euphonium is also very nice.
Congratulations, Tony. I really enjoyed this one. A beautiful groove, truly a special track, and I am happy for you. Here’s to many more!
