Music Studio is STILL amazing, and now owned by Steinberg? No longer Xewton?

I was mucking about with an old ipad Air and forgot I had this amazing DAW on it. The sounds are very good and the internal effects just give you more to love. IAA compatible synths/effects are a nice addition. The chord player was the first in all ios Daw's and now Steinberg bought the company? Not surprised to be honest. Music Studio was ahead of its time. Anyone got any info of this merger/takeover?

Comments

  • Was one of if not the first iOS Daw I ever bought. I have no idea what Steinberg buying the company means for the app, Will there be an overhaul of the app itself? Cubasis is already light years ahead of it at this point but it’s still running on my 2020 iPad Pro running the latest iPad OS, so maybe it’ll get a refresh but I don’t see them making it compete with Cubasis.

  • So they own Cubasis and Music Studio? I think we can guess what's going to happen to Music Studio.

Yeah, that's what I was thinking, or has the programmer been hired by Steinberg and we can thank him partially for the Cubasis we have now? Either way we win, I guess?

Trivia: The original FL Studio Mobile was a reskinned version of Music Studio. The PC/Mac version of FL Studio still has a plugin synth called "MiniSynth" with the same interface design as Music Studio.

Whatever that guess would be would have happened already. They bought it in June 2018. It's still around and was updated in Dec 2020.

  • I’ve been using Music Studio on iPad for years. Just got a midi keyboard (Arturia) to run Music Studio and problem is keyboard requires connection to computer which then must have lines out to speakers/headphones. That creates a problem for Apple products which are turning too much to wireless, so plan on switching to Microsoft. (Current iPad old and dying so replacement needed anyway.)
Question is, is there a version of the Music Studio app for Microsoft? I see search leads to a prompt for Music Studio for Android. Would I load that? I know there are lots of DAW systems out there many of which may be more sophisticated than Music Studio but would like to stick with Music Studio for ease of use and to eliminate the down time of familiarizing myself with a new system.

  • @fdb, Music Studio was never published for Windows. You can't run the Android version on Windows.

What keyboard and iOS device do you have? You should probably be able to use it as a midi controller for your iOS device so that you can use Music Studio on the iOS device directly.

  • I was just thinking about this the other day and wondering what was the whole point of Steinberg purchasing this app or if there even was one? Was there any benefits at all for users?

It, and Alexamder Gross, may have had some useful technology for Cubase. That's a more likely motivation than wanting to benefit Music Studio users.

    Yup. Acquiring talent and code.

I believe they aquihired him to help with the Android version of Cubasis. He did the original version of FLSM as well.

    Ok, now that makes sense

Thanks. Using Arturia Keylab MKii keyboard which is a midi as well as a workstation. iPad last update iOS 10.2.1. It simply won’t update no matter how many update notices I get so this iPad will be at 10.2.1 forever. The music I’ve recorded is on the Music Studio on this iPad so…
My problems: 1) battery power on iPad sketchy at best. 2) most important problem is connectivity. That is, (a) midi must run through the iPad for power and to operate through the Music Studio app. So if midi power will run by connecting to iPad charger input, I am left with only the stored battery power since I can’t run a second power cord to charger. And, (b) only output for speakers is headphone jack. May or not be feasible. Fine for headphones while recording but may or may not suffice for running studio monitor speakers or stage sound system. Haven’t gotten that far. And (c) I may want to use both headphones for vocal monitor and studio speakers. What then? Lastly 3) Recently started using M&D MD75 headphones. iPad won’t recognize for Bluetooth access. When using cord, I get intermittent pop up’s saying cable not compatible etc. they otherwise work fine but the pop up interferes with whatever I was doing/recording and I have to clear before I can continue.
That’s why I wanted to know about Music Studio app for Windows or whether Android version would run through Microsoft computer. Since answer is no, I either get new Android computer with Music Studio app or…
Bottom line is I need a computer that allows all kinds of hookups by wire, not Bluetooth. Apparently I must get a new laptop. Something post-Bronze Age that allows for hookups by from midi and out to power source.
Most frustrating part is the Arturia is brand new out of the box and, it only functions with a computer, meaning not at all.
    Any thoughts appreciated.

@FDB, you never answered what model iPad and keyboard you have. There may be a way forward but you haven't supplied enough details to look for any ideas.

I read earlier today that there are Android emulators for Windows. It's a long shot - but maybe you can find one that would run Music Studio and work with your keyboard. Honestly, I wouldn't expect success, but who knows?

  • @FDB . I wasn't clear on your power/MIDI problem. If you use this Apple USB adapter, you can connect your Apple charger to power both the iPad and the keyboard.

You might consider updating your iPad to a relatively newer model, possibly a refurbished one from Apple. Be sure it has the headphone port; latest models do not. Music Studio is still in the App Store, so you'll be able to continue using it.
