Android as Bluetooth MIDI controller for iOS

edited August 2022 in General App Discussion

How’s the inter compatibility between the two operative systems?
Can audio standards be used flawlessly or does one require additional (usually on payment) apps?

I need a portable midi controller for when I’m on the go and I thought to use my mobile phone as keyboard, while keeping the iPad as DAW.

Has anybody experience with it or can suggest (possibly freeware) software to setup the connection?

If it is easy and quick to connect and with less apps as possible it’ would be a lot better than cumbersome setups that kill productivity.
Also, my Android phone is almost out of space 😁

Thanks!

  • First, check that your Android phone supports BLE, aka Bluetooth 4. That's required for Bluetooth MIDI.

  • Yes I checked it before, it has Bluetooth 4.2; should be fine.

  • I would suggest using the iPad for both things, as there is likely to be more problems with connecting an Android device to the iPad. Latency and the need for additional apps to make the connection work would probably be your biggest issues.

My issue is exactly that I can’t have a midi keyboard on the screen without sacrificing some parts of the synth/sequence apps.
I don’t need to see it on the iPad, I just need to play/control it.
That’s why I want an external midi controller (without having to buy additional hardware just to have an octave or few knobs available when not at home).

I thought that Bluetooth MIDI is a standard specification, hence should be supported easily regardless of the platform; or, at least that’s what standards are usually created for. It’s not iOS exclusive technology.

  • I remember trying something similar a couple of years ago with a small Android tablet, but it was a very cumbersome process that gave me more latency and disconnects than doing it with my iPhone.

Maybe someone who has tried this more recently can chime in.

  • Or use Lemur over OSC/WiFi maybe?

Pixel 6a has a few good apps that work, as does Samsung. The BLE specs vary a lot from maker to maker on Android, so beware. Generally, iOS has less jitter and a tighter bound on latency (polling interval), and two orders of magnitude more quality apps, but at a $$.
