Kundun

Kundun, the name used in addressing the 14th, and current Dalai Lama, means “presence”. There is no question that he is a multi faceted man who understands how human interactions work. He has been a savvy politician for his displaced government. The Chinese killed 1,000,000 Tibetans and destroyed scores of monasteries. Yet the Dalai Lama seems serene, and often joyful. I recommend the Scorsese film “Kundun” (free on YouTube) and “Seven Years In Tibet” to gain an appreciation of this unique and spiritually powerful individual.

The track is not particularly Eastern, but it has a regal quality that lead me to the title. Ravenscroft 275 and Galileo2.

  • Hi Mike,
    Regal, indeed.
I am feeling royal, and kingly, in a serene kind of way.
Very fitting tribute to the Dalai Lama.
My hats off to your lovely creation.
    Rene

  • I also agree. There is a certain regal feel to this. Almost like a royal procession but with an air of humanity.
Your piano playing is something I will always enjoy hearing. So much expression in every note.

  • People often destroy that which lay’s without, often because they fear what lay’s within. Thank you for your beautiful creations, you often bring me so much joy <3

  • Listened with attention to this beautiful track.

This is beautiful. He posted this on FB today:

In big cities, on farms, in remote places, throughout the countryside, people are moving busily. Why? We are all motivated by the desire to make ourselves happy. To do so is right. However, we must keep in mind that too much involvement in the superficial aspects of life will not solve our larger problem of discontentment. Love, compassion, and concern for others are the real sources of happiness. With these in abundance, you will not be disturbed by even the most uncomfortable circumstances. So, if we really want happiness, we must widen the sphere of love. This is basic common sense.

Widening the sphere of love, something I’d hope my music does, or at least aspires to do.

  • The reference to The Dalai Lama got my attention. There is something about him. Maybe it's that he is always smiling and uplifting. When he talks of peace, you somehow believe that it's actually attainable. The closest we ever got to him was Dr. King. I'm at work now, so I will listen tonight.

  • Thanks for listening @ReneAsologuitar @MadeofWax @Gilbert @bygjohn
@knewspeak, thanks so much for letting me know. We seem to disagree on some things (though, strangely, I'm never quite sure, which is fascinating), but I’m glad music brings us together. Be well, my friend.

  • This is really good. A laidback road trip that takes me along the road less traveled. Sometimes it's nice to just sit back and trust the driver. Little things along the way get my attention. Little triplets at 1:47 that repeat a few seconds later, with an 'out of place' chord in between. I think of Ravel's 'Le Gibet' with the bells ringing in the distance. At 3:25 we approach a steep hill. Will the car make it? We're going up... we get to the top, and there are those recurring bells again, and they brought their friends. This is very pleasant to listen to.

  • Thanks for the kind attention @Paulieworld. You brought my attention to that triplet motif. It's interesting that leit motifs appear in improvisation without much thought at all.. Ideally, they appear unbidden and are not intellectually contrived.
That’s genuine improvisation in my scheme of things

  • Lovely track, it’s amazing that you improvise all this music… a rare talent indeed👌

  • I wish you had called this “Etude #42” and left religion out of it. There’s a new category for controversy.

Regarding Dali’s Llama: he’s supposed to be reincarnated and the Chinese Government says he’s a fraud and they have the real Llama. I think they pull him out for big events. He doesn’t use FaceBook… I wonder is he’s on TikTok which the government has an interest in… mostly to subvert western youth and convert them towards social media addictions.

On a positive note: I don’t like the the Piano Organ layering… it sound like an Epiano from the 90’s. If you drop the organ I’ll give it 5 stars. The playing is excellent. Did you write it out yet for students to practice their Etudes? I know there’s no app for that on IOS… we have tried.

    tastes….
yesterday I bought gallileo2 , which I tried to not buy as I dont like imitations, but I had posaibility to play on this app before, and I miss this organ. so bought and layer on free sfz yamaha grand piano (I have no ravencroft yet) and I loved it, even if it sounds like imitation,
even recorded small fragment…. organ is nice as it gives no release decay - just like e piano exactly!
(just practice - not a produced or mixed record):

@szczyp, you want a great FREE Keyboard app? “Numa Player” from StudioLogic (the MIDI controller/synth company).
Many great keyboards and some strings and pads included for…. Wait for it… did I mention, free.

    PS: Nice organ chops, dude.

downloaded and tried, interesting, compared to Module Pro grand piano and to yamaha c7 sfz - seems different, Im far from piano keyboard now, I will check what feeling is on Numa Player, but thanks - I didnt know it exist.
ravencroft is trusted purchase, and lastly was on sale…. but will be again in some time, maybe then.

you know what? Im in half of 7 years in Tibet now, what a nice time to be with you ABF people, preparing presets from some recorded others people vocal samples in drambo, wathing mentioned movie (play to it) on half sceeen, and this is now

    from other hand:
its even interesting how buddism is splitted nowadays by countries and many parts, I know holywood put kind of filter but recording from the top and all words about kundun brings me interesting today to check whats going on with dalailama, as I was somehow ignorant before to Tibet thing.
thanks @McD I appreciate your lessons in Mosaic!

and of course words are only words, but man, I have new grand piano now at my ipad to PLAY, it is something real! APPRECIATE!

  • I especially liked the second track. Maybe our resident organ maestro @Daveypoo will Leslie on over and give some comment. Keep up the good work. Probably Ravenscroft will go on sale at the end of November (Black Friday).

I think the Daily Poo will enjoy hearing another tasty organist.

Organists have a special handshake using both hands and both feet. Weird when you see it in public.

On social networks they use “S’up, O.P.”
*O.P. = Organ Person. Now they shoot me for outting their secrets.

    I have been SUMMONED!!!

Groovy stuff, @szczyp - you've got some great licks. The layering of the piano and organ is a cool effect - I'd love to hear a fully formed track with these ideas.

@LinearLineman I did give your all above a spin a while back. Very stately indeed - cinematic in a similar way to the recent one by @McD at I commented on.

You both should score an imaginary movie - pick a basic concept and then create sketches for the various moods... That would be a fun album to listen to.

  • @Daveypoo its not so easy to get feeling „im ready do finish recording till the end” without cigaretes, coffeing and more „helpers” which I leaved 7 months ago, easy is just practice without worrying.
Each one day is one more small step forward, this morning for example I rethinked how Im use loopy pro auv3 to control patterns in atom under Drambo.

temping is tp be „the best” but it is destroying something in me, so I get it slowly, I try to like myself again, and not to compare. I do this most of the time on under mind level.

But this forum learned me to be open. and not for „leaving something after me” but for inspiring others like they inspire myself. I still see policeman - woman with coffeine i 8k super quality video and Your master hammond! 👌

  • @szczyp I'm flattered, but I am FAR from being a Hammond master. I'm just an enormous fan of the instrument who knows a whole lot of tricks to get it to sound good ;)

I understand how creating music without stimulants (alcohol, caffeine, tobacco, marijuana, etc.) can be challenging. You've got the right attitude - you have to like yourself and your own music, because at the end that's the whole point! Just make the songs you want to hear and you'll be good to go!

  • Just started home-brew „podpiwek”
a Polish and Lithuanian non-alcoholic beverage (even though it contains a small amount of alcohol, about 0.5%).
But its on the side. Yes, yours sound is powerful!
It is first almost day, yeast working, and I drink grain coffe without coffein, just for nutirents.
And I still watching documents movies about Tibet, there is a lot more interesting aspects, like Gendun Choephel.

  • @szczyp perhaps you’ve seen this. If not, it might help you with your perfectionistic thoughts…

    thanks!
yes I seen this lately as you posted . very true and slow spoken understandable video.

sometimes Im like this slow man on the woods, in nature - even if its city, but more often mind WANT something, and planning what will be later etc

so I wabisabi accept this state of mind, ok Im in such state now, and what? I ask my self rethorically. I allow me to be, as this „me” is I dont know what. its like „me” with me :)))) i know it is off topic, or maybe somehow related a little

  • This movie „Budda” is simple explanation of life, rent is in polish, english sound, a few half minutę advertisements inside also.

  • I think when it comes to Tibetan Buddhism it's important for most westerners to get the kind of reality check that an article like this affords. This is definitely not to take away from the charismatic nature of the Dalai Lama:

Indeed the idea is to dissipate karma not continue it, the solution I would say is quite simple and humbling.

  • I also wish Penrose well for his work on cyclical nature, also that of consciousness. <3
