Police at the Door feat. Flo & DJ Puzzle - Daveypoo, The Mobile Music Minstrel

Police at the Door - my latest tune, featuring my friends Flo & DJ Puzzle. I think you cats will really dig this one.

For some reason this reminded me of the nights when my friend and I used to see Police Chiefs here in London collecting "something" from coffee shop owners in Soho so blatantly.
They walked in empty handed and then walked out with a fat envelope and a cup of coffee.
We used to wonder what was in those envelopes once a month.

    Nice track and cool video.

    Thanks for sharing.

  • Thanks for watching, @Gravitas

  • This is a really excellent production. For the record, did you resort to any desktop tools?

    It's a pleasure as always.

  • @McD I'm almost offended that you asked. Almost.

No - all iOS. Flo flew me his part and used his iPad - I think it was Overloud and BYOD he was using. DJ Puzzle flew me his stems and I have no idea what he used.

But no - I literally don't have any music making software in my house except for my iPad.

I’ll wager the DJ used some hardware but that’s why they stick with the DJ nomenclature.

I wish you’d consider making an album featuring Florent Roux. His skills deserve to be widely recognized.

We have a local musician that puts his albums together without ever getting the band together and then he produces videos of each player recording his part:

Next week his local band will play live in the park.

@McD - I'm enlisting him when I feel like a) he's got the space and b) the tune is something he'd be into. I've asked him to play on a few different tunes in the last year or so and this is the first one that's actually come together. He's a bit tricky to nail down, and he just moved, so while I'm sure we'll do another track together I'm not sure when that will be.

I've got a bunch more tunes in the works, so if a particular track seems fitting I'll see if he's up for it. That being said, I don't think he'll get widespread recognition on anything I do so if that's what he was seeking he could definitely find a better vehicle than my silly YT channel ;)

  • Excellent musicianship and I agree with Mcd, the production on this is top notch. Good to hear Flo playing again.

  • He's particularly lyrical on this one @MadeofWax - thanks for the kind words. I put a lot of effort into getting the production just right to ensure that the rest of the track was to the same standard as his lead, musically and production-wise.

  • Excellent music :)
Reminds me of the Beastie Boys In Sound from the Way out album.

  • Any comparison with the Beastie Boys is fine by me - thanks @Identor

  • That was really fun-kee and developed nicely into a 12 inch mix. As others have said, excellent musicianship and production but then I would expect nothing less from such a line-up! 😎

Thanks for the kind feedback, Colin @AlterEgo_UK I definitely went for the long-form mix here as I wanted to leave room for Flo to do his thing.

The tag at the end was a bit of a lark. When I was tracking the scratch bass part to outline the arrangement, the drums were looping past the end of the melody. I added the bass outro off the cuff, then it just sorta developed from there.

Flo originally sent me his first take mixed with the rough I'd sent him, so I couldn't use it. He did a second take to send me just his part alone, but his first take was amazing and I wanted to use it somehow. I used the app Moises to extract just the guitar but it kept bits of the Rhodes part, so I used the crazy backwards-like delay to mask the parts I didn't like and VOILA! Blazing outro guitar solo achieved!

    😉

  • The best thing I love is the guitar solo in the middle.
This creation is full-packed with musical excellence, almost 9 minutes!
    The bass playing is exquisite.
Love this music, plus excellent video production.

The guitarist used to do App reviews on this forum. His handle was @flo26 and his YouTube Channel
Is Florent Roux. He’s a French musician that is well known and a gun for hire (I think).

He decided not to spend time on the forum for reasons he didn’t share but probably to really focus on
Building his YouTube Channel and practicing his instrument as a primary focus.

@Daveypoo is the bass player and he’s really good at crafting believable IOS Drum parts. One of his passions is rock/jazz organ styles and us uses a little 37 key MIDI controller that he recommends from Arturia. I got one and it’s rock solid with a great organ style keybed.

I’m not aware of this DJ. There are a few DJ’s here but they tend to cluster somewhere else.

Thanks for the kind words, @ReneAsologuitar The DJ is Jason Donnelly aka DJ Puzzle. He's another YouTuber and iOS music maker.

I especially appreciate your commenting on the bass parts. I work really hard to craft parts with movement that help lift the song up and bass is a role that often goes unnoticed - when it's good it often flies under the radar. I appreciate your attention to detail.

Any chance for a walkthrough of the song in a YouTube video? A explanation of the creative process, apps, etc?

  • I'll consider it, @Montreal_Music - making videos is difficult at the moment as I don't really have a space to film or lighting. Hopefully in the next few weeks things will shift and I'll be more able to do so.

As far as apps go, I'm using the usual suspects - DigiStix 2 for drums, Hammond B3x for the organ, VTines for the electric piano, processing the bass through Nembrini Blackice Beta Gamma. The clavinet is Numa Player as it's a bit more biting a sound than NeoSoul Keys Studio 2 (my usual go-to for clavinet) run through MixBox for the wahwah. Lots of Lunar Lander for the organ and clav, FAC Phazer on the electric piano, MixBox on the master drum bus and also the master out. Kleverb is my drum reverb of choice.

Glad everyone's still into this one. BTW - the video is made of 100% free-to-use stock footage, carefully assembled into a rough story line. My videos tend to be an afterthought since I put so much more effort into the music, but this one deserved something different than a compilation of old album covers or pictures of organists ;)

  • I dug it! Nice work all around @Daveypoo!

  • Thanks, @Edward_Alexander - I appreciate that you're a regular listener!
