Riffler and Staffpad
I imported Riffler MIDI and wave audio into Staffpad and assigned instruments, configured the audio, beefed up the drum parts and orchestral cowboy bell ( metallic bovine clangus).
Riffler kicks the philharmonic on it’s pompous ass.
Comments
15 listens and y’all are left speechless.
I’ll take it.
Get Riffling people. Staffpad really can’t keep up. It lags the Riffler transients by a large margin.
Damn! Yes!!! (3 exclamation points) I'm gonna listen to it again!
I need to hear this on my 'good' headphones. I can't turn it up without a few people complaining. This needs to be longer. Regarding the transients, maybe set to half speed and start gradually increasing the tempo until it works. Does StaffPad have any really pizzicato string libraries? Don't give up on this. It's killer! Zubin Mehtal.
There are pizz strings playing the Riffler Riff.
What I think I will do is layer some Riffs based on the same scale/root. Riffler has different style settings and see if I can pass out more Riffs to the orchestra like power chords, etc.
It’s a massive savings in time to get complex rhythms into StaffPad versu handwriting then. But I watch people in videos do better than I with handwriting but I’m notoriously lazy. Tapping out text on the phone like this drives me crazy and the typos are insane but being forced improves accuracy so…
The piano roll editor is a PITA on an iPad. I don't know how you do it on a phone!
I think this is a cool idea that needs further development. It doesn't need to be done in a single sitting. I spent about a week of evenings on Anger Management before I was reasonably satisfied. It started out completely different and morphed into the 'thing' that I posted. Most people wouldn't like it, but we're oddballs. Go for it!
@McD kool track! Thanks for sharing! 👍🎸🐬🚀
That’s real good, but I don’t understand your complaint about StaffPad. Is it about the ease of importing a riff or the sound of the SP libraries?
@MobileMusicpro has a video that reminds me that MIDI Guitar 2 can convert any audio to MIDI and AudioBus can route it into Cubasis. Cubasis can output a multitrack MIDI file for import into StaffPad.
So, no pencil needed for really complex MIDI import.
It’s the attack of the typical orchestral musician. They attack all notes pretty gently. Using accents on every note can help a bit. Pizz also tends to be treated as something that must be precise. The strings and brass are the worst at jazz and rock genres.
Riffles create really kick ass metal and funk riffs that just sound mushy with the orchestra in general.
I’lll keep look for articulations and libraries that excel at orchestral funk, pop, and metal.
But symphonic pastiches are wonderful. I’m thinking about some Star Wars style projects and I’ll need to get the brass to really play with some bite.
I have up to 3 more Brass libraries to purchase looking for the best articulations and how to use them.
MIDI doesn’t provide any details for auto selection of Marcato, Pizz, Accents which are distinct from the volume levels… an accent is just loader than it’s peers even when the volume is “ppp”. I’m not sure StaffPad detects subtle MIDI volumes changes and maps them to articulations. So, a lot of hand editing is still needed but you can pick an articulation and tap the relevant note heads so it’s not that finicky.
If I am understanding @McD I think the strings are lacking attack. Even the pizzicato libraries. I will listen again when I get home. Maybe some extreme compression that pushes it instantly to 0db with a noise gate of some type. That would completely change the character of the sound, but it might sound good or 'interesting'. I think of the stabbing scenes in Psycho. It was a good effect that gave me goosebumps and still does.
This project illustrates which instruments have bite and which are loose and floaty:
A fully accented trumpet gets close. The mallet percussion and Pizz stings are closer to being tight.
I listened again last night with proper headphones. I think it's all there, just out of balance. I think the Riffler guitar is overpowering the strings. Maybe bring that down in the mix and boost/brighten the strings a bit. A little compression might help with the attack. Disregard what I said about a noise gate. This is a cool concept. I hope you continue to develop it.
That Audio To MIDI app looks promising! I might get it this weekend.
would pulling the tracks a little bit forward in time (like setting an amount of milliseconds negative time offset in AUM, or in Xequence/Atom for MIDI) help?
Genius… I’ll raise @Paulieworld’s 3 !!! and give it five !!!!! (as Janice Nicholls said in the 60s… UK people might get it !)
