The *LA Pledge*

More of us should adopt the LA Pledge:

After purchasing a new app or piece of hardware I will make a finish piece of music with it before I can buy another.

This sage piece of advice was given freely on the forum by the LA herself… I’m trying to avoid mentioning her by handle because she generally shows up and states “I didn’t say that.”

It’s the wisdom that needs to be documented.

Who wants to live by the LA Pledge. Just be advised she still uses the DAW she bought in the 90’s
Because she seems to honor some powerful ancient wisdom: It it ain’t broke…

  • It’s not a bad idea. I now just have to write 473 pieces of music to catch up with everything I own so far…

You can take the pledge without considering purchases before you take it. So, buy something and get to work.

I was kidding about that, but I do think it’s a good idea, and should probably just take the last thing I bought and put something together.

  • It would be really nice if LA Pledge takers would upload their new work in Creations.

I’m going to take the pledge and get that M1/2 MacBook I have been pining for.
I mean the pledge will make me not waste a single purchase on some $2 FX app.

Make every purchase count because it’s a commitment to do something productive with all this Capital outlay.

And being productive is like work.

Buying something is a tribute to the GAS Gods of Human Addiction. They think we’re quite funny… so predictable. “Take the Pledge Monkeyboy… and fail to keep it. Ha-ha-ha…”

  • Oh shit, I need to make something using a MacBook Air… I’ll use Koala or GarageBand. Those GarageBand live loops are amazing… thx @seonnthaproducer for the suggestion. I’m sorry I missed that Dua Lipa. The Katy Perry is good.

With great pre-packaged materials my impostor syndrome script kicks in hard.

No worries. When I get back, I can send the project to you.

There's also a few top secret ones I posted all over the forum. I'll try and gather a few. Been a while since I organized them.

Thanks for the assistance when I basically have been taking a dump on GarageBand and I do believe I should pay some penance for my arrogance. But that Impostor thing is real for me. Ol’ School…

This has always been my method. (She says, smugly, reviewing recent output already posted to Creations using Weather Drones (‘Pray To It’, newly purchased eurorack) and ‘Supermassive’ (newly purchased Flowtones app).)

My own twist : I must always use the Shiny New Thing in a new piece within 24 hours of receipt. Everybody Fights. Nobody quits. - the Rojack Rule.

I went the Migration Assistance route to move 256GB from my old MacBook to my new toy… and all I get to do now is watch this file transfer widget move back and forth for hours.

Apple gives NO CLUES about progress. None except a raw trsnission speed for the peer-to-peer connection. 100% would mean 1 hour 49 minutes so I should check in the morning because… 100% never happens and Apple takes forever to make a basic execution plan and a list of files to move. arg. But the good news is the extra storage to make my new toy functional again after just filling the system and having to start throwing out old apps. arg.

ARG: The migration is still chugging along behind the curtain of that stupid GUI. The GUI is shown on both sending and receiving computers.

I should have just add my Apple ID and duplicated my admin user and had some fun
With a few of the IOS apps that work in M1/2 Macs. But no I went the long way towards just importing all Email and apps and files and docs and photos and you get the idea: 256GB of hurry up and wait.

Using the LA Pledge, I need the migration to finish. Hopefully when I get home from the hospital it will be ready to log into and maybe make something with Koala… but GarageBand makes a MacBook production closer to an IOS production. I’m expecting some small differences because “Apple” treats these platforms as competitors and IOS is a sandbox compared to Mac OS.

It’s OK. I’m looking through the current batch of SoundPacks and they expose features of GarageBand I did not know existed. The Looping capability is powerful and that’s my Achilles heal since I’m an old tape studio type.

I have so many potential directions to go that I suspect I won’t dig into GarageBand as a product tool.
I tend to seek interesting problems and try and find solutions and optimizations since I find flow in problem solving and actually don’t make much in the way of finished goods.

  • Friggin’ Migration Assistant takes days… I needed a computer and I cancelled it. It had surveyed 128GB of my files so far in 36 hours. Applications some other categories still needed to finish making their “lists” for transfer. I’m considering a UCB/Lightning cable transfer as a better option when I can lock both computers up for days. I’lll probably just build the 2nd system from scratch.

I started loading my import apps from the App Store. I even bought the new 4 Pockets app on the MacBook Air and it was ready for downloads on iPhone and IPad and Intel Mac. No declared MAC support but it runs.
