Well, AUM does have a gate if you MIDI map its builtin Gain module.
Apart from that, Drambo is gating paradise. From a simple noise gate to a more advanced downward expander to rhythmic gates with any shape you can imagine, the toolbox is waiting to be opened.

  • I find these interesting + fun..

    Perforator
    Gatelab (free)
    midiGATEs
    FAC Envolver

damn. well i haven’t gotten drambo yet cuz i was holding out until i finished writing for a show i was playing (using aum). but now i guess all signs point to drambo so i think ill finally dive in :)

If you can describe your "dream gater", I can give you a few hints about where to start.

  • my woodngate is my goto

  • I'll second all the above, and add the free GateLab by Audiomodern

Momma will love me forever when I get home and give her this!

  • Koshiba is my favorite because it mixes gates with filters-per-step. Very very cool.

dang. didn’t really have any idea that you can step sequence gating like these apps. great to know! lol this is the one time i’m kinda just looking for a simple gate to just do classic gating effects with the signal i put through it. big reverb’d snares that immediately cut out sort of thing

'K, this is a gated reverb (the typical Phil Collins sound) that will also act as a usual noise gate if you replace the sampler by audio input.

Nembrini have a standard noise gate that might work for that. “Might” because their apps are aimed at guitars, so it’s possible it might not be optimal for percussion. Though a noise gate is a noise gate (you’d think), and what Collins used for his gated drums. I think it’s free, or cheap, too.

Unfortunately it's not as simple as that. Not every noise gate allows you to adjust the gate closing time and a downward expander allowing for a more natural "noise reduction" is even more rare.
